Welcome Home
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. Despite how long it's been, the cabin still looked good as new. It had a white exterior with accents of blue to match the sea that was just down the road from it. The round windows in front were new and gleaming, and the white door with the decorative trim even had a welcome sign hanging from it. I abandoned this cabin long ago when I was a teenager. I remembered that I didn’t want to step foot in that cabin again. It was only really used for vacation purposes anyway, so it was easy to avoid. But now that I needed a place to stay, this cabin was the only thing standing between me and the streets.

Suspenseful Mystery Stories That Will Keep You Guessing
It’s no secret that mystery is one of the most popular genres in literature today, and it has been for centuries. Maybe that’s because we all like to play detective and try to solve the puzzle before we finish the story, or maybe it’s because humans are naturally curious about the unknown and what lies behind closed doors. Either way, if you want to read some suspenseful mystery stories that will keep you guessing until the very end, then here are three of my favorites from the past few years.

Followed
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. “Someone lives there now?” my little girl asked, her raven curls bouncing as she pointed excitedly. No one has lived there for years. My daughter and I pass by the dilapidated cabin often, since it was on the way to the end of the road where her bus picks her up for preschool. It has always been dark, and no one has been in there. At least, not since we have been living where we are now. But there was indeed a candle glowing in one of its broken windows. The candle was tall and yellow, and it had the brightest orange flame.

The Kids Clubhouse
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. This cabin was seated back along the tree line on the property across from Lawrence’s house. Lawrence has been living here for the last forty years, living alone and retiring here away from the city. Not many people were around here, only a few neighbors that lived acres away from Lawrence. There were more chickens and cows around here than there were people. But once in a while. Lawrence would see hikers, travelers and visitors come by and a few would stop and peak into the old cabin.

Three in a Row
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. Inside the cabin, Louis sat with his knees tucked against his chest just beneath this candle, backed up impossibly close to the moldy wall. He dared not stray from the flickering candle’s tragically short range of glowing light. The rest of the cabin lay before him engulfed in an impossibly inky black darkness. It was the kind of darkness that seemed to swallow everything, and any noise seemed muffled. Louis vaguely recalled that outside had been a clear starry night accompanied by the full moon. But none of that light was present now.

Charlene
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. It's been said that it was a young woman who would light that candle, to chase away the dark. It has been said that she has been doing this for years, long before she died. The story of Charlene is not very well known, but I know it by heart.

Welcome to Death's Door
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. I have seen this candle burn before, years ago when I was young. Back then when I was a child, my mother owned the land along the trails in the forest, and with it was a cabin. It was a simple log cabin with rustic windows, a slanted roof with log tiling and a crooked wooden door with iron hinges. It was simple, with a small wooden porch to match the rustic décor. It has seen many families living behind its windows and doors while my mother has owned it. When I first saw the candle burn in the window next to the front door the first time, I asked my mom who moved in to her cabin. Was it another old lady like Mrs. Bernelli? Or a couple like the Dufoure family? Or maybe another odd man like Mr. Hanner, who liked to collect twigs from the forest that looked nice to him.

Devour
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. You see the candle from your camping space in the field next to it. You also see that the cabin door is ajar. This puzzles you. The door to that cabin has been locked for years.

It's Kids, or a Hunter
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. I ignored it at first. Just kids looking for a place to party. Or maybe a hunter that needed shelter for the night. It’s nothing, I told myself. I abandoned my curiosity and continued walking home along the trail. A coyote jumped out in front of me, carrying a baby possum in its mouth. The possum tried to wriggle free, but the coyote crunched down on it, crushing its skull. Blood poured out of its mouth and onto the path. Buzzards circled overhead, waiting for the coyote’s leftovers. Rain began to fall. Thunder crashed in the distance.
