Surviving the night

A terrifying encounter

By OBENPublished 2 years ago 7 min read

In the village, nestled amidst shadows and whispers, stood a sinister game house that beckoned to us, my friends and I, with its dark allure. A gathering place, the game house lured us like lost souls seeking refuge from the mundane confines of our daily lives. Each evening, as the sun surrendered to the insidious grip of night, we would venture forth, drawn by a mutual passion for games and adventure.

The game house, a mere 2 kilometres away from my parental abode, served as a haven for our nocturnal escapades. The air crackled with anticipation as we immersed ourselves in the world of games, surrendering to the thrill of each virtual conquest. Amid the flickering lights and intense concentration, time ceased to hold sway over our eager souls.

Ah, dear James, my steadfast companion in this realm of pixels and competition. With his motorbike as our trusty steed, we would embark upon the journey to the game house. And when the inky darkness of midnight draped itself upon the world, we would mount his mechanical beast once more, riding back to the precipice of our separate paths. James would kindly alight me before continuing onward, his house a mere reflection of my own. Such was our routine, a dance choreographed by fate and camaraderie.

But alas, fate is a fickle mistress, capricious in her machinations. On that fateful day, I arrived at James' residence, eager to embark upon our customary journey. Yet when I crossed the threshold, the spectral tendrils of dismay gripped my senses. James, there he stood, his countenance wrought with discomfort, a girl by his side. A pang of betrayal stung my heart, for this unexpected encounter threatened to disrupt our harmonious routine.

In a moment of faltering trust, James beseeched me to proceed to the game house without him, assuring me that he would follow in due time. Reluctantly, I acquiesced, for my ardour for games outweighed the unease that gnawed voraciously at the recesses of my mind. Pedalling away on a borrowed bicycle, I clung to the hope that James would soon join our merry congregation, and together, we would wend our way back home.

Within the game house's labyrinthine confines, time slipped away like an elusive spectre, its passage hidden from my consciousness. Engulfed in a swirl of excitement and competition, I lost myself in the fervour of the games that unfolded before me. Oblivious to the encroaching nocturnal hour, it was not until the haunting chimes of midnight whispered upon the air that my solitary predicament unveiled itself. Panic surged within me, its icy tendrils constricting my heart as the realization dawned like a moonless night.

An eerie stillness hung heavy in the air as I darted outside, my eyes desperately scanning the bleak expanse for a means of transport. Yet the darkness, like an insidious shroud, had stolen away every sign of life, leaving me adrift in a sea of trepidation. Fear clawed at the corners of my resolve, but I was loath to reveal my vulnerability to the merciless jeers of my comrades. Thus, I resigned myself to the solitary path that lay before me, tracing the lonely road back to my ancestral abode.

With a trembling spirit and naught but a flickering candle to guide my way, I set forth upon the desolate path. The silence of the night was pierced by the distant barks of hounds, their frenzied cries amplifying my trepidation. Shadows danced menacingly, their dark forms hinting at malevolent figures lurking just beyond my frayed perception. With every step, my gaze darted nervously, as though anticipating the visage of a hidden pursuer, a spectre ready to seize me in its icy grip.

And then, the tempestuous tides of fate conspired to ensnare me further. Amid the dimly lit landscape, a figure materialized, standing like a lone sentinel, a mere twenty-five meters away. The urgency within me quickened my pace, drawing me closer to this enigmatic presence, hoping for companionship in the face of encroaching danger.

As I approached, a chilling realization coursed through my veins, freezing the very marrow within. The figure, oh, how grotesque it appeared! Overgrown hair and a matted beard framed a countenance etched with horror. His clothing, tattered and turned, spoke of a life unhinged, a soul lost to the maelstrom of twisted existence. A voice, like the rustling of autumn leaves, permeated the air, emanating from those cracked lips, uttering words meant to ensnare.

"You, come here," he hissed, in a voice that scraped against the fragile fragments of sanity that remained within me. Fear and a sickening curiosity compelled me to heed his summons, albeit with cautious steps that barely concealed my trepidation. A precarious dance unfolded on the precipice of darkness as I crossed the threshold of the road, yearning to maintain my distance from this ominous apparition.

Yet, like a thunderstorm heralding impending doom, the figure unleashed a bellow that shattered the fragile confines of my self-possession. "I said, come here!" The ferocity of his demand sent icy tendrils of alarm coursing through my veins. I dared not approach any closer. With a trembling heart and apprehension gripping my very soul, I continued my solitary journey on the opposing side of the road, my gaze locked with the fury that burned within his eyes.

Suddenly, his malevolence manifested in a stick grasped tightly within his gnarled hand. His pursuit began, a macabre ballet of predator and prey, as he chased me mercilessly through the veil of darkness. Panic propelled every stride, my screams blending with the cacophony of night, but he showed no signs of relenting. Desperation clawed at my chest, rejoicing in the distorted rhythm of my laboured breaths.

At the edge of despair, a last vestige of hope emerged. A mighty oak beckoned, its branches reaching out like skeletal arms to cradle me in its protective embrace. With a final burst of strength, I hurled myself behind the tree, wrenching my shivering body from the predator's sight. My heart pounded with the intensity of a funeral dirge, its rhythm echoing the spectre of my imminent demise.

Through the apertures of my sanctuary, I observed his relentless search. Each step, each breath brought him perilously close to my hidden sanctuary. The veil between life and death seemed infinitely thin, the chasm threatening to swallow me whole. And then, a feline emissary of divine providence emerged, a black cat darting from the very vantage point where I had sought solace. The creature, in its instinctive wanderings, diverted his attention, drawing him away from my trembling form.

Fortune had dealt me a chance at escape, and I seized it with abandon. I sprinted from behind my arboreal saviour, my feet pounding upon the unforgiving earth as I raced toward the sanctuary that awaited me. As I recoiled within the safety of my abode, inhaling the sweet breath of sanctuary, relief cascaded over me like icy waters, extinguishing the fires of fear that had consumed me.

As the somber drapery of dawn reluctantly unveiled its veil, the dissonant echoes of cries and anguish wafted through the air, its malevolent tendrils reaching the very depths of my weary soul. Compelled by a macabre curiosity, I ventured forth into the tumultuous embrace of the morning mists, my heart heavy with foreboding.
There, upon the forlorn road, a solemn congregation had gathered, their collective gaze fixated upon a lifeless figure prone upon the cold, unforgiving ground. Dread mingled with sorrow as the truth unfurled before my eyes. The wretched being, the one who had pursued me with a fevered madness, now lay motionless, an enigma reduced to a mere vessel of clay and blood.
Whispers, like ethereal tendrils of speculation, seeped through the air, revealing the man's grisly fate. It was whispered among the murmurs of the onlookers that he had met an abrupt end, cast aside by the cruel hand of fate itself. A vehicular collision had rent asunder the tenuous thread of his existence, leaving him trapped in the icy clutches of the eternal slumber.
As the curious whispers reached my ears, bearing tidings of his tormented inner demons, I drew inward, my secrets entrenched within the confines of my mind. Words remained unspoken, for the phantoms that had pursued me were not to be shared with kindred souls. Silently, I vowed to conceal the truths that danced upon my trembling lips, preserving the veil that cloaked me in a shroud of secrecy.
From that day forth, the game halls, once a sanctuary teeming with the allure of competition and camaraderie, became an abode of dread in my tortured psyche. The siren call of nocturnal adventures, their splendorous promises dulled by the specter of that fateful night, held no sway over my weary spirit. Like a moth fleeing the threatening flame, I distanced myself from the realm of temptation, opting instead for the solace found within the boundaries of daylight.
Such a harrowing encounter, with its brush against the malevolent forces that lurk in the recesses of vice, birthed within me an unyielding hatred for the entangled web of substances that enthrall and ensnare. Drugs, like fiendish alchemists, weave their wicked spells upon the unsuspecting souls who dare to partake. The siren seduction of alcohol, with its intoxicating allure, became a specter embodying peril in its every drop. My existence, once intertwined with the thrill of nocturnal exploits, underwent a profound metamorphosis, morphing into a solemn testament of abstinence and self-preservation.
