Chapter 1-Autopilot
I couldn't breathe. My heart was about to crawl out of my chest. But I keep going. I couldn't stop for anything. My body would have to make due until I got to safety.
My mind shut off leaving my legs to continue on in autopilot. The trees resembled kindergartners drawings as I flew past. The sound of my heavy breaths bounced around my ears. I hoped I didn't need my ears as the beat took over my hearing.
A burning sensation rippled from my legs to my chest. Contrarily, it made me run faster. My legs giving out at any second crossed my mind but I ignored the burn in my chest and continued on. Stopping at this rate would leave me to fall into the thorns that crunch under my feet.
When would this ever end?
The sun made my bare skin boil. Now would be the perfect time to reapply sunscreen. That is if I still had my backpack. Without any other choice, I battled the sun and ran on.
My eyes started to flutter.
No. No. No. No. No.
I need to stay awake at all costs. I must keep running. I'd rather not fall victim to the fears currently attack me. I must run while I'm still ahead. Not knowing how much longer I have sends a shiver down my spine. My toes curl as I push myself faster. A clearing ahead makes me breathe a sense of relief. It soon turns out too good to be true.
Chapter 2-Goodbye
I dig my toes into the ground. The mud taking shelter between my toes and sticking to my heels. It would be easier with sneakers. Unfortunately, I had to leave them behind. My toes start to give way pushing me forward. My breathing quickens. My hands turn clammy as I turn them into fists. A drop of what I can only assume is sweat falls down my forehead, nose, and chin. My bare chest heaves.
I'm practically panting as I look to my death. My death that never happens.
I silently thank my toes. I was ankle-deep into the soil. The earthy substance moving under my toenails.
I'm standing at the edge of a cliff. One tiptoe forward and I would fall to my death. A quite painful death I presume by gazing at all the jagged rocks below. I lift my feet from their makeshift compartments and slowly back away.
My breath goes back to normal with each step I take. Something grazes my rear. I halt not knowing what to expect when I turn around.
Chapter 3-Above Ground
Without wasting another second I look behind me. There's nothing there. At least nothing of the human or animal nature.
The laughter almost fails to escape me when I discover it was just a tiny shrub. But it's no time for jokes and laughter. I can't risk being found.
I run half of the way I came. But make a sharp right which causes my balance to tremble. Picking up speed my breathe hitches again. I've never been good at running. In this situation, I don't have an option. I run or I die. I'm suddenly thrust into near darkness.
The sun has disappeared leaving the sky to turn a dull gray. But I continue on.
Before I feel it I know it's coming. Then it happens. Once, twice, thrice. One at a time, then I'm pelted by the sky above. Each drop cascades down my body. Gliding through my curls and down to my muddy feet.
I don't remember going this far. I don't remember the road bring so far away. Once I get to the road I'm safe.
I'm confident my car still rests where I parked it. There's no way he could just drive away. The rain gets harder as it bounces off my glistening skin. Picking up speed my feet start to slip. Thankfully, I stay above ground, for now at least.
Chapter 4-Safe
After what seems like hours the rain stops. Leaving my feet to splash into the scattered puddles. Each step I take I can feel another glob of mud land onto my legs and torso.
The mud sticks before making a squelching sound and falling to the ground.
A clearing ahead makes my heart pump. My hearts preparing to dive. I force my legs to run faster. I'm relieved my path is flat and is nowhere near any cliffs.
Steps from the clearing I can make out my car. The mixture of its paint and the sun momentarily blind me. But I push forward. I'm not giving up that easy. Not now.
I yank the door open. Thankfully, I accidentally left it unlocked. My keys lay in the center console. Without a second glance, I speed off. Moving as far away from the trees as I can.
My breathing evens out as I mutter I'm never seeking shelter in a forest again.
