My Review of "Rabid"

A horror movie with subtle messages being told.

Rabid is a horror movie with some interesting themes. Horror movies always have interesting themes so it's not totally unexpected. This time they talk about beauty, the food industry, health and our obsession with life.

This movie starts off with our main protagonist Rose. She's a lowly assistant for a fashion designer. She was in a horrific car accident when she was younger. This had scarred her face and parentless. She was fostered by her friend Chelsea's parents and had grown up to be a pretty timid woman. Still she wants to be a fashion designer but nobody takes her seriously. They chalk it up to her looks.

Chelsea likes to look after Rose and she knew Rose has a thing for a photo journalist named Brad. So she asks Brad to ask Rose out on a date to this party they're all going to. Things were going great until Rose finds out that the date was actually a pity date and she stomps off in embarrassment and rage. Unfortunately for Rose she wasn't really paying any attention when she was setting off in her scooter and a car runs into her.

After this accident Rose is terribly disfigured and she just basically can't handle it. Luckily and conveniently there's some sort of private medical facility that comes out of nowhere and gives Rose an opportunity of a lifetime. They want her to be a test subject for an experimental procedure that would be able to fix her disfigured face.

Rose agrees to this crazy organization and lo and behold her face miraculously looks better than ever and she basically looks like a supermodel now. She soon finds out that she's getting more attention in the right way with this new look and reaps the benefits of being beautiful.

There's only one problem. The experimental procedure she went through had a pretty huge side effect and she gradually finds out throughout the movie what is happening to her.

The whole pace of the movie is a little wonky sometimes but it's manageable. You understand what's going on but the pacing is a little off. Sometimes things just miraculously happen and then they draw out some unnecessary scenes. The whole movie still works though.

The actors have some sort of weird awkwardness to them which is also a good thing in a way because it's a horror movie. Their awkwardness starts to make you wonder if their intentions are true or not. Everyone seems to be a suspect double crossing Rose. I couldn't tell who was good and who was bad.

I didn't think I would pay so much attention to the décor of the set. There is a lot of art on display that pretty much match the theme of the movie. They even match things that are to come as well. They did a good job with this and the art department of the entire movie.

I like where they were going with the message about beauty and how we value it in the world. It's apparent not only in the fashion world but in life in general. The procedure that they perform is something that a lot of people would probably want to go through.

Early on in the movie they talk about eating meat and vegetarian. I know it was sort of a foreshadow of what's to come but throughout the movie it felt as though there's a message to stay away from meat. It works with this movie but at times it did feel a little preachy.

There was also messages of the concept of our health care system. Some of their messages relate to the pandemic we're facing today which is quite odd that they would be able to predict it a few years ago assuming this movie was written way before the film was released. They talk about coverups for personal gain and the ago old horror theme of someone playing god.

Of course it also talks about obsession with our own personal goals and objects of affections. Why do we always take these obsessions to such great heights that we don't care who is affected by our pursuit of them? I can see this question being real for many of us in real life.

Overall, I was still able to enjoy this movie. It was fun and had a lot of important messages but I found that the pacing was a bit off with it. I wasn't a fan of the acting in this movie either. You can tell it was a small budget movie so you have to give them props for what they were able to produce with their budget though. I have to give this movie a 6.5 out of 10. It is an admirable movie because seeing at what resources they had to make this movie.
