“There was only one rule: Don’t open the door… but, then again, they also say that curiosity killed the cat…”
Was it satisfaction Marilyn was after when she drew the handle back? Stepping into the darkness of parts unknown, she wasn’t afraid. She kept going. Past the tourniquet of cobwebs and a palpable air so thick you could cut it with a knife, but only if you managed to keep your hand above your eye.
Though the path was straight, the mind created curves, aware that danger could strike at any moment.
“How strange,” She thought. “When one is left to their mind being their sight. How it confronts one with truth.”
She knew she could die. Death is always an inevitable truth when you take your life in your hands.
A wedding is a new beginning, but this was a chance.
For once, Marilyn had been left alone.
Why didn’t they want her to open this door?
The passage was long. It seemed never-ending.
She was all alone, yet, however threatening it sent a chill up her spine, awakening senses she had only ever heard professed from a stage.
“Is this courageous? Stupid? Depraved?”
In spite of herself, she had to smile until…
Torso caught of guard. She was winded by a brutal impalement of something much duller than a knife.
Felled, she still pushed a hand out, ever forward…
Sharp…
A corner.
Her blood ran cold, but her touch persisted. She pulled herself up…
“My God, this is twisted… yet should I end here, at least I know now of life…”
That’s when she found two eyes shining bright, out of this coffin and into her own.
Still a bride…
Still condemned…
But at least now she exists in a tomb that she chose.

I love how you pushed back with the curiosity killed the cat bit. You can cut it with a knife… only if you manage to keep it above your eye. ~Just absolutely amazing~ This was poetic and captivating, I love that it has layers to it. I love that your unique voice and thoughts were intertwined in the webbing of the stories plot. It brought the story alive and gave its own unique character, achieving both fear and wonder in its effect on the reader. Well done Anna.
Nicely done! Reminded me of Phantom with the hand at the level of your eye. Really invokes fear! I could picture her moment of realization.
Wow curiosity really killed the cat.
Love the heroine's determination and the ending which is tragic? ...and yet....triumphal?....because there is something great about facing one's fate on your own terms.
