Island Struggles

Alone

By McKenzie JohnsonPublished 4 years ago β€’ 3 min read

The storm was raging, and I could tell that my boat would soon be either destroyed or would capsize. I wanted neither, but the storm gave it no choice. I could feel that I would soon be lost at sea. With this in mind, I radio the mainland for help, but there was no answer, I think the water shorted my system. Seconds later, the boat did what I had feared the most. It capsized, I was now in the water with no idea where I would land. I though I would die for heavens sakes. I could feel the water entering my lungs, I could no long handle the waves tossing every which way in this vast ocean. I closed my eyes and welcomed death itself, only to wake up hours, or days later on a beach covered in seaweed and sand. I could feel rashes all over my body, and I felt disgusted covered in complete filth, but I also felt hungry I could feel my stomach churning, and begging for food. Although, I had no supplies. I truly had no idea what I was going to do. Then I decided to go into the jungle, maybe I could find a wild animal, and maybe I could start a fire, but who I am I kidding. I have no such thing as survival skills, let alone surviving without any materials or a survival kit. I felt at that point like I was going to die, it was certain death. I would be greeting the grim reaper within the next few weeks. I could still at least try to survive, whether I'd live or die would be up to fate. Whether help would arrive to get me off this island so I could see my sweet mother again, or I'd die before anyone every noticed I was missing, or before anyone sent out a search party. Well, there's no point in dwelling on the what ifs, so I'll look for some food. First, I'll break off a tree branch to use as my weapon, and off we go into the jungle. I have no idea what I'm looking for or what I'm doing. I feel as if I'll have to learn through experience which is exactly what I'm doing right now. As I continue scavenging through the thick jungle, I come across some berries. I have no clue if they're safe to eat or if they're poisonous, and I also have no idea how to tell. I'm very hungry at the moment, and my two options are to take a chance by eating berries that may or may not be poisonous or keep walking and risk not finding any other food and starving to death. My two options aren't the best, but I'm truly left with no choice. If I had a coin I'd flip it and leave it up to mere luck, but I don't even have that luxury. Though, I feel as if my hunger has got the best of me while forcing myself to decide. So I'll go with eating the berries. I pop one in my mouth, chew and then swallow. It seemed to go down ok, so I eat the rest of the berries I found. Somewhat proud of myself for being able to find the berries without getting bitten by a giant spider, or even a giant snake. Now, that I'm somewhat content with my hunger problem, I decide I need to make shelter before nightfall. I definitely need wood for shelter, but I have no clue on what else I need, or where I'll even start once I get the materials. Though I know one thing is for sure, I'll definitely need to find out before nightfall.
