Into the night...

the haunted cabin

By Nicole SandersPublished 4 years ago 6 min read

‘Small kitty soft kitty little ball of fur.” I heard the tune being sung next to me turning into humming a moment later. I stopped and turned to see… just barely… a form coming closer to me.

“Really Fran?” I asked smirking a bit… she really did have a way of lightening the mood. Though being stuck in the middle of the darkened woods was much you could do. Her face was coming into view now she seemed dragged out.

“What I’m just calming my nerves. Can we stop soon?” She said shrugging. We looked around not seeing much. The darkened night was thick around us, looking around all I could see was the tree forms right in front of us, though the night seemed to be calling to me like Franny’s low humming.

“ just a moment more.” I said pulling on to her arm and moving forward still not knowing where we were going.

In the dark of the night the candle burned like a beacon calling to whatever lurked in the darkness. The night sounds become a soundtrack to the night around us. The cabin that sat in a clearing in the woods seem to have swallowed us and the cabin in its vast darkness... COME INSIDE… The cabin seemed to calling to me I looked at the burning candle once more before blinking and moving forward.

Putting my foot on the first step of the porch making a creaking sound, which seemed to drown out the sound of the night. COME INSIDE…. I seem to hear again. I paused again and took a deep breath, to many Horror movies, I thought as the candle seemed to burn brighter. The wind around me seemed to still the moment my hand touched the knob of the door and without even pushing the door opened with a slow deafening creaking sound. I didn’t think about anything I stared into the darkness of the cabin the low glow of the candle seemed to warm the room a tad and I moved forward as if I was being pulled in by an invisible force.

The moment I was in the room the door closed with aloud slam leaving me in the darkened room even the candle that seemed to burn in the window wasn’t helping… I fumbled with my pockets for flash light. Why hadn’t I been using this before. The light in my hand seemed to help but not enough, the darkness seemed to flicker behind the beam of the light. I moved in closer, the smell of the room was almost over powering, it smelled almost… Dead. COME INSIDE… I heard again. I was inside, I thought as I moved a bit more into the room. Where was Franny? I asked myself finally realizing that she wasn’t even pounding on the door behind me.

I swung around at the sound of a low sound that I couldn’t make out. I pointed the beam of light towards the sound. There was some thing in the corner that I couldn’t make out, so I moved closer. I was breathing heavy as I moved closer to the spot and stopped all together when I seen what was there.

There in the corner was a form that I could only describe as… if Golem had come to life. The form was sitting in the corner of the cabin that seemed so dead on the outside, yet on the inside was quite alive. The form was rocking now and seemed to be saying something. I moved closer as if I couldn’t have stop myself if I wanted to. “Save me, save me, save me, save me ….” The form stop and for a moment I thought that the form had just gave up the words, then it started getting louder. “SAVE ME SAVE ME SAVE ME SAVE ME!” The form stopped and then turned toward me making everything in my body stop. My heart my breath and my feet have totally given up on me. I wanted to run but there was nothing in me to make the effort. I blinked the form was gone, there was sound outside the window I could see past the candle that still burned there. There was another form outside in the night that I could make out and it was more frightening than the Golem form from seconds before. Franny was swinging from the tree outside staring at me with wide frightened eyes… What!?!?! I mouthed the word and gasped as something grabbed my shoulder “Saaaavvveeeee…meeeeeee.” The soft haunting whisper of the golem form said I turned to see the form behind me with his boney hand out stretched to me as I backed up as fast as I could. I needed to get out of here! I needed to be free. “Saaaavvveeee….meeeee.” The words came again in the same low haunting whisper and the form moved closer to me. I was losing my mind. My back hit the back of the door and I fumbled with the door knob not being able to open it at first.

“Not today!” I yelled as I finally gained a voice and my freedom at the same time. Falling off the porch I looked around the area for Franny to see if I was just as crazy as I thought I was. “Franny! Fran!” I yelled, my throat feeling as if I had swallowed shards of glass. She wasn’t here, she wasn’t even in the tree that I just seen her in seconds before. In the dark of the night I felt as if I was going crazy and that Cabin was the main character to its own horrible nightmare. How did I even- I stopped when I heard a loud scream coming from inside the cabin. It was blood curdling and I didn’t take another second to even grab my flash light that had fallen when I had fallen. I ran from the cabin, not looking back “SAAAVVVEEEE… MEEEEE…..” The scream came again.

I ran til I couldn’t run any more… until I heard the humming coming from all around me… I stopped looking around in the darkness, the spotting where the humming was coming from. She was moving towards me as if floating humming with her head down and jerky motions. “Small kitty soft kitty little ball of fur…” Her low hoarse voice hummed, She was in front of me now flinging her head up to look at me with her cold dead eyes. She opened her mouth as wide as she could and thousands of bugs came flying and crawling out! The humming continued… getting louder. As the bugs flew out they seemed to move to me into me and I was being drowned in them. Covered in things that crawled and flew and slid across my skin, I could feel them all over and there was nothing I could do. The last thing I heard was “PURR PURR PURR.”

I flung up, out of my sleeping bag and looked around the tent that I had put up hours earlier. Man that was intense… I took a couple deep breaths to calm my nerves, closing my eyes to the shakes. Then I heard the humming coming from outside my tent… it was getting louder and I clutched my sleeping bag as if it would save me from what ever lurked outside my tent. I seen the shadow that lingered out there and it moved to open my zipped up tent. The zipper slowly unzipped and just as it opened up I held my breath. “PURR PURR PURR!”

I flung up out of the dirt that was below my body. Looking around the camp site that I had set up hours before the fire that I put together was dead now and I was colder than I had thought I would be tonight. I looked around some more into the darkness seeing a low glowing coming from the darkness, seeming to call to me. I rubbed my hands together and let out a deep breath. I needed to get back home. I was just suppose to be out there till it got dark and then go back. I started for the light in the distance.

Making it to the clearing I seen that it wasn’t my house at all it was the cabin that seemed to be abandoned for years with its lone burning candle burning its window, calling me home… “Come inside.”
