In The Field

A Murder Mystery

By Joseph Roy WrightPublished about a year ago 3 min read
Someone haunts these lands.

Jessica Rose was walking the Scottish Highlands, taking in the beautiful scenery of huge cliffs, mountains and fields of green. There were flowers under trees and the sun shone bright, on that summer's afternoon; Jessica hadn't felt so at peace. Even the sun felt nice upon her skin, it was not too hot, as a chill breeze swept through the countryside. It was perfect, a beautiful day that was about to turn horrific!

As Jessica found herself wandering a large field of flowers ahead of her, there were daffodils, roses, sunflowers, a human corpse, violets.

"A dead body!" She gasped, falling onto her back, there right in front of her lay the body of a bloody man, who appeared to have been beaten to death. His fave was still purple and swollen from bruises, the man's forehead had dried blood splattered across it, stemming from a flesh wound that most likely killed him. He was a tall, thin young man, who might've been handsome once upon a time, before this attack. Then the stench assaulted Jessica's nostrils, the smell of rot and death, it was enough to make her puke. She recovered and ran, so far away, back towards civilization and reported the murder to local police.

However, when the police investigated the flower field, the corpse had seemingly vanished.

"It was right here!" Jessica cried, pointing at the spot she had found him, "he was beaten to death!"

At first, the police didn't believe her, thinking her to just be some crazy lady who desperately wanted attention, but then Officer Brown noticed something unusual. About five flowers had been squashed and trampled over, on a closer inspection, he noticed the pattern of a big boot's footprint. They were large in size, roughly size 12, much larger than Jessica's small petite feet. She was telling the truth, somebody had moved the body! Officer Brown looked northwards and noticed a few flowers missing from the field, they also had been flattened, but eventually this trail became too difficult to track.

Later that very same day, search dogs were sent out to sniff around. It wasn't long before they began chasing a trail only visible to them. The police men followed the dogs, keeping their eyes peeled for anyone or anything suspicious within this beautiful field of greenery and flowers. Eventually the dogs led the police to an old abandoned hut, it looked ancient, the wood was almost black with decay and was seemingly burnt up from a fire that happened long ago. It truly was like something out of a horror movie. The police entered cautiously, only to witness something truly disturbing.

The inside of this place was decorated with guts and painted with blood, pieces of human skin were hung up by metal hooks and chains, the whole place stunk of death. It was so bad and horrific, that the regular police didn't have the stomach to enter, so a forensic team with gasmasks and rubber suits came in to investigate the interior. What they found was the result of multiple murders, all of the bodies were slaughtered in this hut. They found a bloody and beaten head, decapitated from the rest of his limbs, that were likely torn apart, strung along of the gory furniture. His head was found in a fridge that was surprisingly still operational, alongside a collection of plastic containers that held unidentifiable meat, most likely human. Whoever had committed these murders must've been a cannibal, and this hut was where he cooked his human meals.

After this discovery was made, Detectives searched long and hard for any answers, grasping at straws to find the identity of this mysterious cannibal. Yet, no matter how hard they tried, speculated or interrogated suspects, nothing came up and so the case went cold. For all we know, the Scottish cannibal could still be out there, preying on his next meal. So if you ever find yourself visiting the Scottish Highlands, look out for predators, because you never know what strange monsters are out there.
