I Found a Playlist Called “Songs You’ll Die To” - It Had My Name on It

It started with a Spotify notification. It ended with me not sleeping for three nights.

The First Ping

It was 2:17 a.m.

I was scrolling through TikTok, ignoring the fact I had work in the morning, when I got a Spotify notification:

“A friend shared a playlist with you.”

Weird. I don’t remember sharing my profile.

Curiosity won over caution. I clicked.

The playlist was titled:

"Songs You’ll Die To."

At first, I laughed.

Some edgy teen must’ve sent it as a joke.

Then I saw the playlist description.

It said:

“This one's for you, Emma. Exactly 11 songs.”

That’s my name.

Spelled exactly how I spell it.

No one outside my close circle knows that.

Track 1: “In the House – In a Heartbeat”

You know that haunting instrumental from 28 Days Later?

Yeah. That was the first track.

I felt a chill. But I told myself: it's a prank.

Then I scrolled to Track 2:

“Every Breath You Take – The Police.”

The creepy obsession tone hit different at 2:20 a.m.

I hit pause. My fingers were shaking a little.

It Got Personal Fast

Track 3 was titled “The Night I Almost Died.”

It was some lo-fi remix with weird whispering.

But here’s the thing.

When I played it backwards using an online tool, I swear I heard:

“Emma. I see you. You’re next.”

I shut my laptop and closed Spotify.

But the playlist kept updating.

A new song every night at 2:17 a.m.

Each more terrifying than the last.

Each one… felt tailored to me.

Track 6 Broke Me

The sixth song?

It was a distorted version of a voicemail I had left my ex after we broke up.

No music. Just my voice.

Crying. Pleading. Unedited.

Only he had that message. And he wouldn’t do this.

Would he?

Track 9: The Footsteps

One night, I left the playlist running while I showered.

Track 9 sounded like heavy footsteps in gravel.

Then a door creaking.

Then silence.

When I stepped out of the shower, a single word was written in the fog on my mirror:

“Stop.”

I Called the Police. They Laughed.

The officer I spoke to suggested I “delete the app” and “maybe go outside more.”

No report was filed.

Final Track: Static and My Name

Track 11 wasn’t music.

Just static.

And halfway through, a voice whispered:

“Emma... goodbye.”

The timestamp?

2:17.

I Deleted Spotify. But I Still Hear It.

I’ve moved cities. Changed my number. Got a new phone.

But sometimes, at 2:17 a.m., I still hear faint static.

Like a song is starting.

I don’t open the app.

I just hold my breath and pray the playlist hasn’t found me again.

Your Turn:

Have you ever received something online that felt… too personal?

Too tailored?

Too wrong?
