A woman holding a rose in the dead of night

By liPublished about a year ago 6 min read

Lü Fangting is an ordinary rural kid. Just after turning eighteen, he followed his fellow villagers to work in Spring City.

Introduced by a fellow townsman, Lyu Fangting worked as a security guard at the main gate of a large residential area called "Jinxing Community".

One night, Lyu Fangting was on night duty. He sat in the security room, sipping tea and keeping an eye on the main entrance of the community. Although the security work was not busy, it was extremely boring. Lyu Fangting felt very bored and picked up a novel at hand to kill time.

Suddenly, a woman, holding a beautiful rose in her hand, was standing at the entrance of the community, looking extremely beautiful and smiling sweetly, as if she was waiting for someone.

Lu Fangting was charmed by the woman's beauty and stared at her intently, completely carried away. The woman noticed a small security guard staring at her. Expressionless, she threw the rose in her hand on the ground and walked away with a sinister smile.

Lyu Fangting walked out of the security room, picked up the rose on the ground, smelled it, and the fragrance was refreshing and heartwarming. He looked at the rose in his hand and then at the street where the woman had disappeared, his heart filled with melancholy. Lyu Fangting held the rose and returned to the security room, feeling very dejected.

After work, Lu Fangting put the rose in his sleeve and took it home, placing it on the bedside table. After working all night, Lu Fangting was very tired and fell asleep as soon as he lay on the bed.

In his dream, he saw the woman holding a rose standing at the entrance of the community again. Lu Fangting walked up to her, wanting to talk to her and ask for her contact number. Just as he reached her side and was about to speak, the woman's head suddenly fell to the ground.

Lü Fangting was extremely frightened and turned to run. But suddenly, that human head flew up and bit his shoulder. He was so scared that he hurriedly grabbed the head with his hand, trying to shake it off. However, the head was as if rooted there; no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't shake it off.

Lü Fangting finally woke up, drenched in sweat, with his pillow and quilt soaked in a large area. Although it was just a dream, it still scared him to death. He was still in shock and sat on the bed in a daze. After a long while, he got up and washed his face in the bathroom, feeling much more awake.

After dinner, Lü Fangting put the rose on the bedside table into a beer bottle, filled it with water and sprinkled some salt. It is said that if you soak fresh flowers in light salt water, they won't wither for a long time.

For three consecutive nights, Lu Fangting had to work the night shift. He ate a bowl of egg-fried rice at a street stall and then hurried off to work. Bored, he sat in the security room, always daydreaming that if that beautiful woman with the flower in her hand showed up again, he would definitely go up to her and ask for her phone number.

Heaven rewards the diligent. Late at night, the woman holding a rose appeared again at the entrance of the community. As soon as he saw her figure, Lu Fangting's heart was as excited as a rattle. The woman holding a rose was still standing at the entrance like the previous night, as if she was waiting for someone.

Lyu Fangting finally gathered his courage, walked over slowly and said, "Pretty lady, are you waiting for someone?"

The woman was twirling the rose in her hand and said with a smile, "I'm waiting for someone, but I don't even know who I'm waiting for!"

Lü Fangting found it rather amusing and said, "Miss, you are so funny!"

The woman smiled slightly and said, "I'm a very humorous woman!"

Lü Fangting tentatively asked, "Is your home nearby?"

The woman shook the rose flowers and said, "My home is not far. It's right behind the First People's Hospital."

Lü Fangting asked again, "Beauty, what's your name?"

The woman said, "My name is Rose. Just as my name suggests, I have always been fond of roses!"

Lü Fangting asked again, "Rose, what a nice name! How old are you?"

The woman smiled and said, "Are you here to register the household? You don't know that a girl's age is not something to be asked casually."

Lü Fangting blushed and stammered, "Sorry, I got carried away and called myself a slut!"

Lü Fangting invited Rose to play in the security room, and she readily agreed. The two of them had a great time chatting in the security room. Before they knew it, the sky was already beginning to brighten. Rose got up to say goodbye: "I have to go to work tomorrow. I'll leave first!"

Looking at the rose, Lu Fangting said, "Give me your phone number. Some other day, I'll treat you to coffee!"

Rose wrote her phone number on the cover of that novel and said, "From now on, if there's anything fun, remember to call me!"

Roses left. Lu Fangting just stared at her back, feeling extremely happy in his heart. At eight in the morning, Lu Fangting handed over his shift and went home to sleep. Lying in bed, Lu Fangting looked at the rose in the wine bottle. The more he looked at it, the more beautiful it seemed, as if he were looking at the beloved Rose herself.

In the evening, Lu Fangting had a light meal and went to work. The night shift was really boring. How he wished Rose would come and keep him company again. Finally, he couldn't hold back and picked up the phone, dialing Rose's number: "Sorry, the number you dialed has been disconnected. Please top up your phone credit..."

Lü Fangting threw the phone onto the sofa and muttered to himself, "What the heck! It's out of service. I can't believe it..."

Rose didn't show up all night. Lu Fangting's heart was on fire like being scratched by a cat's claws, feeling extremely uncomfortable. After working three nights in a row, he could finally rest for two days.

After breakfast, Lü Fangting went to the mobile phone hall and paid 100 yuan for Rose's phone bill. Sitting on a chair, he tentatively dialed the number and the other end picked up!

"Hello, excuse me, are you Rose?" asked Lü Fangting.

There was still no sound on the other end of the line. Lu Fangting asked twice more, but still no sound. He had no choice but to hang up.

Perhaps it was because he missed Rose too much. Lu Fangting couldn't help but walk behind the First People's Hospital, hoping to run into her there. Behind the First People's Hospital was a bustling building. Lu Fangting waited there like a hunter waiting for his prey. Finally, the "prey" appeared. He walked up and covered Rose's eyes with his hand, saying, "Guess who I am?"

Rose gave Lu Fangting a playful twist and said with a smile, "Even if you were reduced to ashes, I would still know you are Lu Fangting."

The two of them chatted and laughed, couldn't have been happier. They watched two movies and visited countless shopping malls. Before they knew it, it was already ten o'clock at night. Rose pursed her lips and said, "I have to go back. Let's get in touch another day."

Lü Fangting wanted to see Rose home, but she coldly refused him. Lü Fangting felt unhappy and thought that Rose must be hiding something from him. When Rose turned and left, he quietly followed behind her.

Rouge came to the First People's Hospital and went straight in. Lu Fangting was puzzled: Wasn't her home behind the hospital? Why did she go straight in?

Lü Fangting followed her in and saw that Mei Gui was heading towards the morgue. He became even more puzzled and followed her more closely. Mei Gui pushed open the door of the morgue, slipped inside quietly, and then turned around and closed the door.

Lü Fangting's heart was pounding wildly. He slowly approached the door of the morgue, leaned close to the crack and peered inside. He saw that Rose had opened the coffin where the body was placed and was slowly crawling in.

Lü Fangting was so frightened that he ran back to the rented hut, packed his luggage in a hurry that night and rushed back to his hometown.
