The Evil Dead franchise is a cult classic horror series that has been entertaining audiences since 1981. With its unique blend of humor, gore, and iconic characters, it has become a staple of the horror genre. In 2023, the franchise is set to release its fifth installment, Evil Dead Rise. Directed by Lee Cronin and produced by Rob Tapert, this movie promises to deliver the same intense horror and inventive gore that fans have come to expect from the franchise. In this article, we will take a deep dive into all the details surrounding the upcoming movie.

The Director and Cast

Lee Cronin is an Irish writer and director who is best known for his 2019 feature debut, The Hole in the Ground. His grimy sensibility is much closer to that of Fede Alvarez, the director of the 2013 Evil Dead remake, than Sam Raimi's live-action cartoons. But he does share one key thing with Raimi, and that's a diabolical imagination.

The cast of Evil Dead Rise includes Alyssa Sutherland, Lily Sullivan, Nell Fisher, Morgan Davies, and Gabrielle Echols. Sutherland plays Ellie, a single mother who is possessed by a Deadite early on in the film. Her psychological and physical torture of her own children, particularly her youngest, Kassie, adds a disturbing layer to the horror.

The Storyline

In Evil Dead Rise, the storyline shifts from a group of friends in a cabin in the woods to a family living in a run-down apartment building in downtown Los Angeles. The movie opens with a road-weary Beth paying an overdue visit to her older sister Ellie, who is raising three kids on her own in a cramped L.A apartment. The sisters' reunion is cut short by the discovery of a mysterious book deep in the bowels of Ellie's building, giving rise to flesh-possessing demons.

The movie's opening act incorporates Ellie's rocker sister Beth and an earthquake that opens up a hole in the floor of the parking garage, where Danny finds an old safety deposit box containing some mysterious records that unleash everything that follows. The building used to be a bank, adding to the complications that the movie has to roll out before it can get to the good stuff.

The Gore and Violence

Marketing for the film revolves around a key scene with a cheese grater, but Evil Dead Rise is packed with creative carnage. Eye trauma, hand trauma, vomit, bugs, broken glass, broken bones, decapitation, dismemberment, stab wounds, shotgun blasts, sharp objects going straight through the soft palate and out the back of someone's head--name a form of grievous bodily harm, and this movie has it.

The extreme gore is combined with violence towards children, making it a grueling experience that a good Evil Dead movie should be. The movie squeezes a lot of sicko juice out of this element, adding a disturbing layer to the horror.

The Franchise and Its Signature Humor

The Evil Dead franchise is known for its signature humor, which balances out the gore and violence. However, Evil Dead Rise downplays this element of the franchise in favor of a more intense horror experience. While this may disappoint some fans, the movie's inventive gore and diabolical imagination
