Door to Fun?

Spooky Micro Challenge entry

There was only one rule: Don’t open the door!

We live in a very old house with a belvedere that is creepy, creaky and cranky enough on its own. So I always stayed away from that door to the attic.

But today my curiosity took over me. While dad was watching TV in the living room downstairs, I climbed up and opened the forbidden door.

At least a million brightly colored plastic balls poured out, knocking me down. Seconds later, I heard my dad screaming, running up the stairs and slipping and falling on the balls, “Denis, WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?”

He finally reached the door and tried to close it. Under the weight of the balls, it only went half-way.

“Help me!” dad yelled.

I got up and put all my weight onto the door. We finally closed it and dad dead-bolted it. We looked around. The balls were everywhere.

“Well, you’ll have to collect them all and put them back. I told you not to open that door, Denis.”

“But why? How?” I was confused.

“I’ve been stealing them for years from various places with ball pits, to create my own attic of fun. Why else do you think I bought this crappy old house? It has a laundry shoot from the Belvedere to the attic, big enough for me,” dad said with a mischievous smile. “Pick as many as you can, I’ll show you.”

I stuffed my t-shirt with the balls and we took secret stairs to the Belvedere I never knew existed. Dad pushed me down the laundry shoot into the dark ball pit, jumping right after me.

I feel a strong pull on my legs. I can’t breathe through the balls. “Daaaad, the door’s still open!” I scream as I slide into the darkness.

I was laughing right up until the end....and then I was left open-mouthed and wondering as to just what the devil happened.....Great tale of horror! We've all taken our kids to those horrendous ball-filled amusement places, after all! Haha!

Oh my I didn’t see the leg pull coming. If the dad fell after him then who was that… I love it!! The way you introduced us to the balls which is fun and harmless then not being able to breathe and the leg being pulled this was terrifying. Makes me don’t want to dive into ball a ball pit, although deeply tempting.

  • What is going on?! Haha, I just got whiplash going through this! Very well written, but now I must know what is happening!

  • At first it was creepy, then it so fun, then it became scary. Hahahahahahaha loved your story!
