Being alone is just one of the many things I fear; on top of life, drowning, darkness and imaginary things/creatures I makeup in my head I cant fully understand.
I mean lets be honest, have you ever just been sitting around minding you own business and then you feel that slight tickle of a slither across your body. The type that makes every part of you squirm in agony, left with only the deep thoughts of everything but what truly was happening.
I'm a pretty big horror fan in general, so I can sit around watching pretty much anything that makes most scream within the night; waiting to be gobbled up by a monster that does no exist. Yet once I am left to the demise of my mind I cant help to shutter in fear, waiting to see what will happen next to make me crumble inside.
Maybe that's what truly happened to me that fateful night on Halloween by the lake. Maybe it was just another figment of my imagination, or fate intervening within my demise hoping to drive me to the point of insanity. So many accusations of what truly happened one fateful night and yet no facts to go on, except for what I think had happened.
The night of Halloween, 9:22pm to be exact is when I went to the local movie theater that was playing a horror classic "The Blob" from 1958. Not many had come to the showing from what I could see, considering most would rather watch a sparkly vampire versus a classic these days. I'm not surprised.
Now during this story pay attention and tell me if I am crazy, or did I truly live this night full of terror that I feel deep within my bones.
Or, was it just a nightmare that so many lead me to believe and I am truly going crazy inside and out.
"Chilly isn't it" a statement to myself but as I glance over to the stranger in a trench coat he smiles a crooked smile.
"Why yes it is a bit nippily" he says laughing at his own joke that I'm sure many have made before him.
As I glance my eyes upon his eyes, I notice they have a hint of seduction behind them, as he only stands a little taller than me at five foot eight. With his hair tucked beneath a beanie and just enough sticking out the bottom like little white icicles fresh from a winter morning. A Rob Zombie t-shirt and combat boots laced up high with black jeans tucked just beneath, I could definitely tell he was my type.
"I didn't think anyone would have come considering its an old classic and not many people enjoy those these days" with another crooked smile he moves in closer.
"Right! Thank you, finally someone who understand my pain." chuckling I realize I'm flirting right back which is completely not like me in the slightest. Maybe its because we are under the full moon on such a romantic night full of terror, I don't know but something in me is saying this could get interesting.
"Well I'm not usually like this but, would you like to go down by the lake and possibly drink and enjoy this hallows eve with me?" His head tilts down just slightly in a way a dog does when it knows its in trouble.
"You mean the lake that pretty much looks like a swamp?" as I look down he has already grabbed my hand.
"Yes!" he says, just like that we were off towards old mill road that would lead us the the lake.
Looking down I notice the road is covered in moss with pebbles scattered around, almost as if the ocean is right beneath our feet. As it shimmers under the moonlight with nothing above but weeping willows, as they clear the path to our destination which is filled with the sounds of nature beckoning us with its call. Its a pretty remote location I would say about a thirty minute walk from town, but what once was a breath of fresh air turns slowly into a breath of rotten fish. I knew our lake wasn't the best and the reason no one really comes out here anymore, but damn has it really been that long since I've been here. Rotten fish and spoiled eggs would be the best way to describe why I haven't. As I move my sleeve over my face just to cover up even the slightest I realize he hasn't talked in a while.
"Are you ok?" I ask as he squeezes my hand tighter and tighter, I notice we start moving quicker as if someone is following us. With every turn I notice him glancing back waiting for something or someone to appear and snatch him away.
"I think we are good now" as he takes one last look around he pulls me in tight within his arms. The racing of his heart says otherwise but in that moment I knew maybe all he needed was a friend or even just the hug of a stranger. I wrap my arms tight around his waist just in hope that he would realize its okay and that whatever he thought was happening is gone.
"Did you want to go back?" I knew it was kind of rude after what just happened but I don't know how he can stand the smell out here.
"Not yet, I just want one more minute of this before it all ends" his voice trembled within those words. What could he mean by that.
I know this was a one night thing and we would probably never see each other again, but I would hope he would want to at least make the most of it. For no matter what he meant by those words, I felt compelled to end what ever suffering he felt within his mind and heart.
"Okay" I said with a smile as I glance upon his eyes that seduced me so.
Feeling his hand slid beneath my chin, tilting my head he leans in to place his lips upon mine. With just one breath in between they are entwined in a passion I thought could only be described through books and movies. Feeling the warmth of his hands glide along my waist as he slowly lowers me closer and closer to the ground. As the wetness from the grass caresses my back sending chills through out my body, I use my legs to pull him deep with in me. His lips as smooth as silk kissing their way along my neck feeling every part of him pressed up against me, yearning for this as much as I am. Sliding my hand around his throat and the other against his chest I flip him over to gaze upon his beauty in hope this was going to last, and just like that it ended just as soon as it began.
Screaming down at someone that once was a beautiful sight and now has turned into some type of a nightmare. Ghoulish sights behold me scrambling to push back as my hand falls within his skin with the feel of something warm and sticky. Whipping my hand back covered in something squirming around between my fingers, under the moonlight shining white as can be; maggots fall to the ground. Moving my eyes slowly upon his body as they trickle from within his chest and seeping out of his mouth like a fountain of ooze.
"I see I wasn't in time" an echo within the wind as a figure approaches me within the dark.
"I am truly sorry you had to see this unsightly manner, I did warn him he only had little time before the change would start" hearing him move closer behind me with the sound of his shoes crunching the earth beneath him.
Was this the reason for his panic earlier not knowing how much longer it would be, is this the reason he felt so frightened waiting for this man to appear. So many thoughts rushing within my head as he approaches the body he glances at me and within that moment I had realized who it is I was looking upon.
"Why do you look like him?" I ask trembling within my own words he smiles his crooked smile.
"Dear child of mine don't be frightened for I had created him just as I have created all of you within this town of mine" as he reaches his hand out towards mine I am stunned for I don't understand the words that have escaped from within his lips.
"Oh no, for I can see this would be a lot for one as simple minded as you to take all in. This town, these people you think you hold so dearly are nothing but my creation from the lake that flows behind you." as he leans into the corps of goo that lays between the grass he shakes his head in a way of disappointment.
"I promise dear child this experiment was not suppose to be something you all would see. For this tragic event I only have one thought, what is it I should do with you." Standing tall he slides his hands within his pockets circling around.
"Am I going to turn into a lifeless pile of goo like he did?" was the only words that slipped between my lips. As he chuckles aloud he stops in his tracks and takes those final few steps towards me, crouching and placing his hand beneath my chin.
"Dear pet of mine now why would I do that, when you just made the experiment more exciting then I thought it could be. I'm going to let you in on a secret that only you will know and will have to live with for the rest of your life, knowing that I permit you to have." standing up he walks towards the lake and throws out his arms turning around to me.
"This was your creation, the swamp disguised as the lake was polluted many years ago by your ancestors and now in return I have created you. A new species with only a few casualties in hopes I can create a new bread of humans that can with stand the end of the human race. For you are one of few that have lasted as long as you have and will continue living your day to day life structured by me, in hopes that one day you all can walk freely amongst the humans in plain sight." he explains this and yet I still don't fully believe it and even if I did why wouldn't he think I would tell someone, anyone.
"So how do I fit into this plan of yours?" I said as he leans in to whisper in my ear.
"Easy you will live the rest of your days knowing what is and what isn't. You will live the rest of your days telling people what happened this Halloween night and knowing no one will believe you no matter how hard you try." smiling he says " Your torture will be the beginning of something new as I erase you ever meeting me, but leave everything else for you to remember the tale of a shadow within the night."
Tears filling up inside me, I don't know what to do but weep and tremble.
"Its okay, I promise it wont hurt one bit and you can go on your merry way." As he pulls me in tight the scent of his shirt brings me comfort and as he hums me a lullaby, I drift into a slumber of chaos. .
