There’s something about ghost stories that stays with you long after the tale is told. It’s not just the fear of the unknown—it’s the unsettling sense that something hasn’t been resolved. Whether it’s the chill that creeps down your spine or a strange moment you can’t quite explain, these experiences leave behind more questions than answers. The idea of ghosts feels like it brushes up against something we can’t fully grasp. And if there’s truth to them, what does the Bible have to say? How do these encounters align with Scripture’s teachings about life, death, and the afterlife?

The Bible isn’t packed with ghost stories, but a few moments in Scripture definitely make you stop and think. One of the most famous cases is found in 1 Samuel 28, where King Saul, desperate and scared, seeks out a medium to summon the spirit of the prophet Samuel. What happens next is eerie: Samuel’s spirit—or something claiming to be him—appears and delivers a harsh message that Saul’s reign is ending. This event raises a lot of questions. Some believe it was genuinely Samuel, allowed by God to appear for this specific moment. Others argue it was a demonic force masquerading as Samuel to deceive Saul. Either way, it’s a reminder that dabbling with spirits can lead to trouble.

Scripture strongly discourages any form of communication with spirits. Deuteronomy 18:10-12 makes it crystal clear that consulting mediums or attempting to interact with the dead is forbidden. It’s more than just a spiritual no-no—it’s portrayed as dangerous, pulling people away from God’s guidance. Even seemingly harmless interactions with spirits could have harmful consequences. 2 Corinthians 11:14 warns us that Satan can disguise himself as an angel of light, meaning not every supernatural encounter is what it seems. If spirits can appear friendly or comforting but carry hidden risks, it becomes even more vital to stay anchored in faith.

The Bible also gives us a firm view of what happens when someone dies, leaving little room for wandering souls. Hebrews 9:27 tells us that after death, each person faces judgment—there are no detours, no lingering between worlds. Similarly, the story of the rich man and Lazarus from Luke 16:19-31 emphasizes this separation. Both the rich man and Lazarus end up in distinct places after death, and neither can return to the land of the living. If there’s no biblical basis for souls to roam the earth, where do these ghost sightings fit in?

Some people suggest that what we experience as ghosts may not be spirits of the dead at all but rather demonic entities posing as loved ones or familiar figures. It’s easy to get caught up in the mystery, especially when strange things happen that seem beyond explanation. But giving too much attention to these experiences can lead us into dangerous spiritual territory. The Bible encourages us to focus on faith in God rather than pursuing things that could pull us off course.

I’ll admit, ghost stories have always intrigued me. There’s something captivating about them, like trying to solve a puzzle where the pieces don’t quite fit. I understand why people find them fascinating—it’s the thrill, the mystery, the need to understand the unknown. But over the years, I’ve come to realize that chasing after these experiences doesn’t lead to anything meaningful. The Bible shifts our attention from the distractions of ghost stories and instead guides us toward a more grounded faith. Real peace comes from trust in God, not from trying to make sense of things that aren’t meant to be fully understood.

Curiosity about the unknown is normal. Life throws us moments we can’t easily explain, and it’s tempting to get lost in the search for answers. But instead of pouring energy into things like spirits or paranormal experiences, seeking truth in faith offers something much more solid. The Bible isn’t here to take the fun out of ghost stories—it’s offering something better. It gives us a foundation to rely on when life feels confusing or uncertain.

Whether ghosts are real or not might never be answered, but that’s not what matters most. What truly matters is how we respond when confronted with things we don’t understand. Choosing to trust God rather than chasing after ghosts brings a kind of peace that no supernatural encounter could ever provide. When faith becomes the foundation, the need for answers that only create more questions begins to fade. That peace—rooted in God’s truth—is something no ghost story could ever replace.
