Buried Alive

Deep in the mountains, a group of treasure hunters stood at the entrance of a dark cave. The leader, Max, held up an old map. “This is it, everyone,” he said, his voice full of excitement. “According to legend, there’s treasure hidden deep inside. It’s been untouched for centuries.”

The group consisted of five people: Max, his younger brother Sam, and their friends: Lara, Jake, and Emily. They had been on many adventures together, but none felt as thrilling or dangerous as this one.

The air around the cave entrance was thick and cold. As they stepped inside, the sunlight quickly disappeared, replaced by darkness. The only light came from their flashlights, which flickered in the damp air.

“This place feels... strange,” Emily whispered, clutching her flashlight tighter.

“Just nerves,” Jake said, trying to sound brave, but even he felt uneasy. The walls of the cave were covered in strange markings, old symbols that none of them could read.

As they ventured deeper, they noticed a large stone doorway, half-buried in the cave wall. Max shined his light on it, revealing more of the odd symbols. “This must be it,” he said. “The entrance to the treasure room.”

“Or a tomb,” Sam muttered under his breath, but no one seemed to hear him.

Max pushed on the heavy stone door, and it slowly creaked open, revealing a small chamber beyond. Inside, there was no treasure—only a dusty stone altar. Resting on the altar was a small, worn-out box. It looked ancient, covered in dirt and cobwebs.

Lara stepped forward, curious. “Do you think it’s inside this?” she asked, pointing at the box.

“Only one way to find out,” Max said with a grin. He reached out and picked it up. As soon as he did, the ground beneath their feet trembled.

“Uh, Max...?” Sam began, but before he could finish, the cave shook violently. Rocks started falling from the ceiling.

“Run!” Jake shouted. The group scrambled, trying to get out of the chamber, but the shaking grew worse. A large boulder fell from the ceiling, blocking the entrance. They were trapped.

The shaking stopped after a few moments, leaving them in silence. Dust filled the air, making it hard to breathe.

“Is everyone okay?” Max asked, coughing as he waved away the dust.

“I think so,” Emily said. “But we’re stuck.”

They tried to move the boulder, but it wouldn’t budge. Panic set in.

“We need to find another way out,” Max said, trying to stay calm. “There’s always another way.”

They began exploring the cave, looking for any exit or passage that might lead them to safety. But the deeper they went, the colder and darker it became. The walls seemed to close in around them.

As they walked, strange whispers echoed through the cave. At first, they thought it was just the wind, but the whispers grew louder, more distinct. It sounded like voices, distant and eerie.

“Did you hear that?” Emily asked, her eyes wide with fear.

“Yeah... it sounds like someone’s talking,” Jake replied.

Suddenly, Sam stopped. “Where’s Lara?” he asked.

They all turned around, shining their flashlights in every direction, but Lara was gone. She had been walking right behind them only moments before.

“Lara!” Max called out, but there was no answer.

“Maybe she went back to the chamber,” Sam suggested.

They retraced their steps, calling out her name, but there was still no sign of her. Then, they noticed something chilling—Lara’s flashlight was lying on the ground, right next to the cave wall. And next to it, there were scratch marks on the wall, as if someone had tried to claw their way out.

“It’s like... she’s been buried,” Emily whispered, her voice trembling.

“That’s impossible,” Max said, shaking his head. But deep down, he felt the same creeping fear.

One by one, the others began to disappear. First Jake, then Emily. Each time, they would hear a faint sound or catch a glimpse of movement, only to turn around and find one of their friends missing. Their belongings—flashlights, backpacks—would be left behind, but there were always the same scratch marks on the cave walls, signs that they had been trapped somehow, buried alive within the stone.

Soon, only Max and Sam were left. They had no idea where the others had gone or what had taken them, but the cave seemed alive, as if it were watching them, waiting for its next victim.

“We have to get out of here,” Sam said, his voice shaking. “This place is cursed.”

“I know,” Max replied, his confidence gone. The weight of guilt pressed down on him. This had all been his idea, and now his friends were gone, taken by something they couldn’t see or understand.

They stumbled through the cave, searching desperately for an exit. But the whispers were louder now, almost deafening, and the cave walls seemed to shift around them, changing the paths they had just walked through. It was like the cave itself was a maze, trapping them deeper with every step.

“Over here!” Sam shouted suddenly, pointing at a small crack in the wall. It was just wide enough for them to squeeze through. It might be their only chance.

Max nodded, and they hurried toward the crack. But as they reached it, Sam screamed. Max turned around just in time to see his brother being dragged backward by an unseen force. His hands clawed at the ground, but something was pulling him toward the cave wall.

“Max, help!” Sam cried, his face filled with terror.

Max rushed forward, grabbing Sam’s arm, but it was too late. Sam’s body was pulled into the wall, disappearing as if the stone had swallowed him whole. The only thing left was his flashlight, lying on the ground, and the familiar scratch marks on the wall.

Max was alone now. He collapsed to the ground, breathing hard, his mind racing. He didn’t understand what was happening, but he knew he had to escape, or he would be next.

The whispers grew louder, circling him, taunting him. He stumbled back to his feet, determined to find the exit. He followed the crack in the wall, squeezing through it, ignoring the voices around him.

Finally, after what felt like hours, he saw a faint light ahead. The cave’s entrance. Max ran toward it, his heart pounding in his chest. He burst out into the open air, gasping for breath.

But the relief was short-lived. As he turned around, he saw something that made his blood run cold. Carved into the stone walls around the cave entrance were faces—familiar faces. Lara, Jake, Emily, Sam. Their eyes were wide, their mouths open in silent screams, as if they had been trapped inside the very rock.

Max backed away slowly, his legs shaking. The cave had taken them all, and it would never let them go.

He was free, but he would never escape the guilt of what had happened. He had disturbed something ancient, something that should have been left buried. Now, his friends were part of the cave, forever sealed within its walls, buried alive.
