The Origin of Bhangarh Fort

Bhangarh Fort was built in the 17th century by Raja Madho Singh, the younger brother of Man Singh, a general in Emperor Akbar’s army. At its peak, Bhangarh had a population of around 10,000. Situated in Alwar district, the fort’s grandeur and scale are remarkable.

Surrounded by hills, the fort showcases intricate craftsmanship. It is home to ancient temples of Lord Shiva and Hanuman, adding a sacred aura to the otherwise eerie site. The fort has five gates and a massive boundary wall, constructed using sturdy stones that have stood the test of time.

A Tale of Beauty, Obsession, and Curse

Though Bhangarh Fort is visually stunning, its past is steeped in horror. According to legend, Princess Ratnavati of Bhangarh was renowned for her extraordinary beauty. Her charm was the talk of the kingdom, and princes from far-off lands sought her hand in marriage.

At the tender age of 18, Ratnavati’s beauty blossomed, attracting countless marriage proposals from across the region. One day, while shopping in the market with her friends, she stopped at a perfume shop. As she admired the fragrances, a man named Singhia, a skilled practitioner of black magic, watched her from a distance.

Singhia, deeply infatuated with the princess, was determined to possess her. Using his dark arts, he enchanted a bottle of perfume Ratnavati had chosen, intending to bind her under his spell.

Unaware of his sinister intent, Ratnavati picked up the bottle but sensed something amiss. She threw it against a nearby rock. As the perfume spilled over the stone, the rock, now enchanted, rolled towards Singhia and crushed him.

Before dying, Singhia cursed Bhangarh, proclaiming that all its inhabitants would perish, never to be reborn, and their spirits would forever wander the fort.

The Aftermath of the Curse

Soon after Singhia’s death, a battle erupted between Bhangarh and the neighboring region of Ajabgarh. Every resident of Bhangarh, including Princess Ratnavati, perished. Following the massacre, the fort echoed with the cries of the slain, and to this day, their restless spirits are said to haunt the site.

A Fortress of Shadows

The spirits of those massacred are believed to still roam the fort. The Indian government once stationed paramilitary forces at the site to investigate the hauntings, but even they failed to debunk the claims. Some soldiers confirmed encountering inexplicable phenomena, reinforcing the fort’s reputation as a ghostly domain.

Visitors to the fort often report hearing the clash of swords, cries of agony, and eerie whispers. Inside the chambers, faint sounds of women weeping or the jingling of anklets can be heard. At the rear of the fort lies a small, dark doorway where strange fragrances and whispers are occasionally sensed.

As evening falls, an unsettling silence envelops the fort, only to be broken by sudden, blood-curdling screams.
