Are You in a Horror Movie?

There are a few very obvious tells, so use this to help you.

By Micah JamesPublished 5 years ago 3 min read

In every horror movie, the characters never seem to realize that they are in one. It even seems like horror movies just don’t seem to exist in their world. And even if they do, they never learn from those characters’ mistakes.

But you… you’re different, smart. You’re reading things like this to prepare yourself. Who knows? You may actually be in their place one day. If someone tells you that it’s stupid or you have no reason to worry, they’ll be thanking you later.

Now, you might want to know how to tell if you’re in a horror movie; it can be tough sometimes. Here are a few things to look out for.

1. Pay attention to the music.

Every single movie, regardless of genre, has a soundtrack. And like other genres, horror has certain music that gives you the hint that it’s horror. Does the music sound ominous? Tense? Did it start quietly and now it’s louder? If you answered yes to any of these, there is a good chance that you’re in that situation.

2. The house or apartment is making strange noises.

There are certain everyday sounds a house or apartment makes that you’d expect. And you know those sounds. However, if you hear something that isn’t usually there, then there’s a possibility that you’re in a horror movie. If you’re a skeptic, then you might want to check; I don’t blame you because I would want to myself. Even if it’s nothing, bring something heavy to protect yourself in case there is something there. It won’t kill the thing, but it’ll hopefully give you enough of a chance to get a head start.

3. The monster seems to keep up with you even if it doesn’t run.

In Halloween, Michael Meyers is always right behind his victim. He even sometimes gets in front of them. There’s nothing I can really tell you to be prepared for this; it’s just a fact.

4. Your kid(s) or pet(s) are acting strangely.

It’s pretty well-known that children and animals can see things that adults can’t see, so you know, pay attention to them. Also, pay extra attention to your child if you have one. The little ones can get easily possessed.

5. You were warned about the town or a certain location in town.

The locals, natives, whoever warned you would know the best. It is wise to heed their warnings. If it was about the town as a whole, get the hell out of there as soon as you possibly can. That is, if you can. If it was about a certain location, for the love of all things good, DO NOT go there. That shit could follow you anywhere. And I do mean ANYWHERE.

6. An inanimate object starts moving, speaking, or any other spooky stuff it shouldn’t be doing.

This goes especially for dolls and other toys. Just don’t throw it out because it’ll find its way back to you. Trust me on this.

7. Your car battery is dead or your car just otherwise won’t start.

The best way to combat this is to constantly make sure your battery is fine and your tank is full. The second best option is to always have a bicycle ready. That way you at least have some sort of transportation to get you away from whatever it is that's haunting you.

These tips are a great start in preparation. Though, there may be a few that I’m missing. So continue with your research and always look behind you. You never know what’s lurking in the shadows.

So now that you have an idea of how to tell you're in a horror movie, learn how to survive one.
