The Forbidden Mystery of the Vanishing Pitha

Now I will share an incident with you, sent to us by a person named Hridoy. He lives in Noakanda village of Palash Upazila in Narsingdi district. By profession, he is a textile engineer and lives in Tongi. This is a very strange incident that has been passed down through their family for over 150 years. Can you imagine that? Let's hear the story. This incident happened during the time of his great-grandfather, whom they address as "Boro Abbu" (Big Father). For the sake of understanding, we will also call him Boro Abbu. So, Boro Abbu was a Haji of that time. Thinking of him as a Haji of that time, you have to consider that people had to walk on foot to perform Hajj back then. It was a very difficult thing, unlike today's world where it is so easy. And he was very well-off. By the grace of Allah, he had a lot of farmland. Allah did not leave him wanting in any aspect, be it money, property, or land.

One day, a member of his family had passed away. They didn't have exact information about who it was, but it must have been someone from their relations. After a few days, a Doa Mahfil (prayer gathering) was organized by inviting the local people and others who lived nearby. Arrangements were made for food for everyone. At that time, there was a custom in that village that invitation events would take place at night, not like we see during the day now. The reason was that everyone in the village would toil hard in the fields all day, and they could only come to the invitation after evening, leaving their fields unattended. So, it was difficult for many to come to the invitation. So, Hridoy bhai's (brother) Boro Ma (Big Mother) had cooked rice, and the rice water (starch) was collected in a large earthen pot. Fearing that the children of the house might fall on this hot starch, she poured it under a haystack near the house.

There was a pond nearby, and he thought the rice water would roll down and go into the pond. His mother had a lot of rice water because many people were cooking; having more rice water is normal. The moment he poured the rice water out, a big snake came out with a "whoosh" sound, quickly passing by him. He was a little scared when such a big snake suddenly rushed out. Anyway, the event ended, and everything was going well. But after a few days, a strange incident happened, a mysterious incident, one might say. Seven cows in the house's cowshed suddenly died together without any reason. Seven cows died together. The cows weren't lying there with broken necks, broken limbs, or signs of snake bites. Then, gradually, all the cows, goats, and other animals in the house, like ducks and chickens, started dying for no reason. Not only that, but the domestic animals and birds of those related to the family by blood also started dying abnormally for some unknown reason. Someone's cow, someone's goat, someone's sheep – whatever they had at home, those were dying. Everyone became very frightened. Then, the eldest uncle realized that there was a major problem here, something caused by a jinn or something supernatural. The next day, he went to a spiritual healer. He explained the whole incident to the healer. The healer said, "Okay, I will come to your house and investigate the matter, see what's actually going on. In the meantime, I'll gather some information."

He came the next day and immediately asked the eldest uncle, "Didn't you have a feast or a prayer ceremony at your house a few days ago?" He said, "Yes." Then the healer looked at the eldest aunt and said, "How many snakes did you see when you were throwing out the rice water?" She said, "One." Hearing this, everyone looked at her, wondering why she hadn't told anyone that she saw a snake. So, actually, she didn't feel the need to mention it, didn't give it that much importance. And at that time, with all the cooking and housework and being busy, she thought mentioning seeing a snake would create panic. So, she didn't tell anyone. Then suddenly, when the exorcist mentioned it, she also remembered the incident. And in villages, snakes are seen around quite often, so she didn't think it was something to be taken too seriously. That's why she actually didn't think it needed to be given importance and simply forgot about it. Anyway, then the exorcist said that there were two snakes there that day. One snake died when hot rice water fell on them. He said they weren't snakes, they were genies. But they were good genies. They mainly came there to eat leftover food, especially fish bones and meat bones. And these two genies were husband and wife. And after the hot rice water fell on them, the female genie died, and the male genie, out of anger, did these things. You shouldn't suddenly pour hot things anywhere like that. And there were holes and other things there, so it was even more wrong to do it there. Then the eldest uncle said, "Actually, she did it without looking or understanding. Can't you find a solution?" Then the exorcist summoned the genie. After summoning it, he said, "You go away." Then the genie said, "My wife has been killed, and you're telling me to just leave? Let it go? Not so easy. First, I will finish their livestock, then I will catch people one by one." Then the exorcist said, "Actually, she didn't realize it. Forgive her. Forgiveness is a sign of greatness." Then the genie said, "Shouldn't she have understood that you shouldn't suddenly throw hot things anywhere? And we didn't come here during the day. We came in the evening. And why would she throw hot things like that in the evening? It was her fault." Then the members who were there, the eldest aunt and others who were present, each apologized.

Then the Jinn says that if another Jinn were in his place, they would never forgive. "Okay, I'll let it go, but in return, they have to give something up." The Kaviraj (village healer) says, "What else will they give up? You've already finished off their cows, goats, ducks, and chickens. They have nothing left to give. What will they give?" Then the Jinn says, "From now on, the people of this family will not be able to make any oily, sweet dishes willingly. However, they can eat them if someone else makes them, or if they buy them. But they can't make them themselves." After that, a strange thing happened. For so many years, no one in this family could make any *pitha* (traditional cake) using oil. They can make other kinds of sweet things without oil, but they can't make any oily, sweet dishes. This continued in the same way for many years. After many years, a woman from that family, thinking it was just a superstition, tried to make some. Then a fire broke out in her house. After that, she understood the reason. However, this incident happened many years later, about 10-15 years later. The Kaviraj was still alive then. The Kaviraj was called again. The Kaviraj summoned the Jinn again. He said to the Jinn, "I request you, please lift this curse." Then the Jinn said, "Okay, I've partially lifted it. From now on, there won't be any fire, but they still won't be able to make *pitha*. Even if they try to make *pitha*, it won't turn out right." Even now, 150 years later, if the people of this family try to make oily *pitha* or any oily sweet things, it doesn't work, or it remains raw inside. A little while ago, Hriday Bhai's aunt tried to make some *pitha*. Some *pitha* were made, but suddenly the fire in her stove went out, and everything was covered in white smoke. When the smoke returned to normal,

Then he saw that not a single pitha (a type of traditional cake) he had made was left. Even the other ingredients he needed to make the pithas were gone. Since that incident, no one has even tried, or they've given up trying. A little while ago, Hriday bhai's uncle, he had met a "Huzur" (religious leader) at the Kakrail mosque in Dhaka, the one that many people visit for Tabligh (Islamic missionary movement). He told him everything that had happened, and the Huzur advised them to stay as they are, that they shouldn't bother making pithas, just buy them. If someone gives them some, then eat it; if relatives make them and give them, then of course, eat it. And it’s not like it's something so essential that a big problem will occur if you don't make it, but making it might cause harm. And if such harm were to happen, then that harm wouldn't be easily undone. After this advice, things have been going on like that, and no one tries to make it anymore. Two years ago, an incident occurred where one of his uncles went to work on the machal (trellis) that was made for the bean plants. He saw a huge snake there. It was a king cobra, or something like it, a very big snake, raising its hood, even bigger than a king cobra, sitting there with its hood raised. At that moment, he screamed. His scream brought many other people from the neighborhood. Everyone could see the snake.

Then Uncle forbade everyone from killing the snake. Everyone was coming with big sticks, some with bamboo; one person even brought a whole bamboo stalk to beat it to death from a distance. They were afraid to go near. Then a local female snake charmer, a *Sapuria*, who was nearby, came forward and said, "Everyone please leave. This snake won't harm you, and you shouldn't harm it either. I won't be able to catch this snake." Then, the *Sapuria* went near the snake, greeted it with respect, and said, "Please leave this place. These people are scared and might unknowingly do something harmful. We don't want any such unfortunate incident to happen. Please go away." After that, the snake raised its hood and slowly moved to one side. Then everyone understood that it wasn't actually a snake; it was a genie.

Even now, the snake is sometimes seen around their ancestral home. The most mysterious thing is that the *pitha* cannot be made. There's some mystery hidden within this, why it doesn't happen. It's not possible to give an explanation. Actually, many mysteries of the world remain hidden in this way. Not all mysteries are resolved; some mysteries remain mysteries. We only know a little about the situation, like we know in this situation why it doesn't happen. But what mechanism is behind it, we will never know. Some things should be left as they are, just like it has remained unchanged for over 150 years.
