Traveling Through Time and Space: The Unlucky NPC Witnessing Cricket's Most Pivotal Moments

Traveling Through Time and Space to Become an Unlucky NPC

By Maher BilalPublished about a year ago 4 min read

In cricket, not every figure is a celebrated player or a famed umpire. Some are shadows in the background, silent observers who witness the greatest transformations but never find themselves at the center of change. This is the story of one such character, who, by a twist of fate, travels through time and space, landing in some of the most pivotal moments in the history of the International Cricket Council (ICC) – but only as an "unlucky NPC" (Non-Playable Character), helpless to alter history yet destined to observe it.

The Strange Beginnings: A Time Traveler's Tale

Our protagonist, a curious soul passionate about the game, is thrust into the past without a clear purpose, like an aimless observer – a ghost in the shadows of ICC's legacy. They entered the formation in 1909, when the Imperial Cricket Conference was born, which meant solely for the British Empire's domains of England, Australia, and South Africa.

Our character stands in the dimly lit conference hall as delegates argue over the rules and vision of this "gentleman's game." The character watches with awe but can only listen, unable to voice the questions in their mind or influence the outcome. A silent NPC, a witness to the foundation that would later grow to govern the cricketing world.

1975: The Dawn of the Cricket World Cup

Time shifts, and our traveler finds themselves in 1975 at England's first-ever Cricket World Cup. It's a moment of pure excitement – the world's best players gathered to compete in a format that no one understands yet.

As an unseen observer, they watch the likes of Clive Lloyd and Dennis Lillee walk onto the field, and the electric atmosphere pulses in the stadium. They feel the tension and joy but can't participate in the cheers or share the thrill of West Indies' triumph. This unlucky NPC watches the inception of the Cricket World Cup, helpless to share in the celebrations or participate in history's making.

The 1996 World Cup: Asia Rise

The time traveler's next destination is a colorful one – 1996, when the Cricket World Cup was held in the subcontinent for the first time, hosted by Pakistan, India, and Sri Lanka.

Standing at Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium, they see a transformed game. The character marvels as Sri Lanka, once a cricketing underdog, takes the trophy, fueled by strategies no one else could have anticipated. They sense the pride of the Asian fans, the joy that fills the streets, but as an NPC, they remain a quiet figure in the background, an invisible part of cricket's most passionate crowds.

2000: The Dark Shadows of Match-Fixing

Just as they feel at home in their NPC role, the time traveler is transported to a darker moment in ICC history. It's 2000, and news breaks of match-fixing scandals involving some of cricket's biggest names.

The character stands by helplessly as Hansie Cronje, the South African captain, admits his involvement. They witness the anguish of fans, the mistrust in the air, and the birth of ICC's Anti-Corruption Unit. Yet again, they can only observe, unable to speak or prevent the downfall of once-beloved icons.

2008: The Technology Invasion – DRS Takes Over

Next, the characters find themselves in 2008, during the Decision Review System (DRS) launch. In a packed meeting room, ICC officials and cricketing legends debate the role of technology in the game.

The character stands quietly as players voice their skepticism and officials defend the benefits of accuracy. They watch as the first DRS decisions are implemented, altering how the game is played. The NPC knows the gravity of this change but remains an outsider, incapable of contributing to the discourse or swaying opinions.

The Big Three Era: A Power Shift in 2014

Now, the traveler is cast into the heated debates of 2014 when the "Big Three"India, England, and Australia – seized financial control of ICC. Tensions are high as smaller nations fear for their future in the sport.

The character watches the historic power shift, understanding that this moment will forever alter the game's global balance, yet they're bound to the silence of an NPC. They wish they could champion the voices of the smaller cricketing nations, but they are forced to remain passive, a mere spectator to one of ICC's most controversial moves.

The End of the Journey: Reflections on the Shadows of History

Finally, the time traveler finds themselves in the present day, standing outside ICC's headquarters in Dubai. They reflect on the countless monumental moments they've witnessed, all as background characters in the history of cricket.

They have seen cricket evolve from a gentleman's pastime to a global spectacle, from Imperial Cricket to the mega-sport governed by ICC. Yet, as unlucky NPCs, they could never influence a single decision, make a single cheer heard, or play a minor role in the changes they witnessed.

Conclusion

The story of this NPC is a reminder that history is filled with silent witnesses, with people who observe but cannot act and who understand but cannot change. This unlucky NPC, drifting through ICC's milestones, represents all who have seen cricket's transformations yet remain anonymous, their contributions invisible.

And just like that, the traveler vanishes into history once more – a silent observer in the ever-turning wheel of cricket and ICC's legacy.
