Popular Misconception About Ancient Rome
Historiography is the study of how history is researched and written. And one of its key lessons is that looks can be deceiving. During the Renaissance, people became fascinated by the art produced by the ancient Greeks and Romans, especially statues. These statues had originally been painted in a variety of shades and colors by their original creators. But by the Renaissance, all of these paints and dyes had chipped off due to wear and elemental exposure. Modern researchers have since used ultraviolet and infrared technology to analyze the ancient statues, examining layers of paints and coatings that remain invisible to the naked eye. I wonder if any of these artists draw that cool S we were all obsessed with in middle school. But the Renaissance artists, who took their technically incorrect inspiration from the Greeks and Romans, made their sculptures unpainted, giving us the pure white marble look we still associate with ancient sculptures today. Copying someone's homework incorrectly-- who wasn't guilty of that crime? As many of these statues depict the ancient Romans wearing togas, this led to the widespread presumption that togas were everyday casual wear throughout the Roman Empire. But in fact, togas were not all that common.

Titanic
On April 14th, 1912 at 11:40 p.m., the RMS Titanic experienced a catastrophic event that ultimately led to its demise three hours later at 2:20 a.m. on April 15th. The largest ship of its time disappeared beneath the ice-cold surface of the Atlantic Ocean, taking with it over 1500 lives, which accounted for more than two-thirds of all the people on board. The commonly held belief was that the ship had collided with an iceberg, but recent findings by scientists have debunked this theory. The Titanic was an impressive feat of engineering, measuring 882 feet 9 inches long, 92 feet wide, and 175 feet tall, with a usable volume of 46,000 328 tons. The ship had four massive smokestacks, each weighing 60 tons and extending 81.5 feet above the deck. The cost of the ship's construction was 7.5 million dollars, which, when adjusted for modern exchange rates and inflation in 2016, would be equivalent to 166 million dollars. The ship was built by 3,000 men working six days a week from 6:00 in the morning, and it took 26 months to complete. Unfortunately, eight people died during the building process, and 246 were injured.

Gunpowder was invented in China during the 9th century.[21][22][23] The first firearm was the fire lance, which appeared in China between the 10–12th centuries.[24][25][26] It was depicted in a silk painting dated to the mid-10th but textual evidence of its use does not appear until 1132, describing the siege of De'an.[24] It consisted of a bamboo tube of gunpowder tied to a spear or other polearm. By the late 1100s, ingredients such as pieces of shrapnel like porcelain shards or small iron pellets were added to the tube so that they would be blown out with the gunpowder.[27] It was relatively short ranged and had a range of roughly 3 meters by the early 13th century.[28] This fire lance is considered by some historians to be a "proto-gun" because its projectiles did not occlude the barrel.[15] There was also another "proto-gun" called the eruptor, according to Joseph Needham, which did not have a lance but still did not shoot projectiles which occluded the barrel.[16]
