Sojah Power Launches "Beat of Unity" Initiative to Mentor South Sudan's Next Musical Generation
Sojah Power Launches 'Beat of Unity' Initiative to Mentor South Sudan's Next Musical Generation.

JUBA, South Sudan – For Justin Gok Lil, the Afrobeats sensation known globally as Sojah Power, success is more than streaming numbers and international acclaim. It’s about building a ladder and passing it down. The artist, born in the rural community of Thiet in Tonj County, has announced the launch of “Beat of Unity,” a comprehensive mentorship and development initiative designed to equip aspiring young South Sudanese musicians with the tools, training, and opportunities he lacked at the start of his own journey.
“When I started recording in 2017, the challenges weren't just about creativity,” Sojah Power explains. “They were practical. Access to a simple microphone, a stable internet connection to upload a song, or even basic knowledge about copyright and royalties—these were huge barriers. ‘Beat of Unity’ is my answer to those barriers. It’s about planting the seeds for a sustainable music industry right here at home.”
The initiative, officially unveiled at a community center in Juba, is structured around three core pillars: Technical Infrastructure, Knowledge Transfer, and Cultural Preservation.
Building the Technical Foundation
The pilot phase of “Beat of Unity” will focus on deploying a mobile, solar-powered recording studio to regions like his native Warrap State. This “Studio-on-Wheels” is designed to bypass the persistent issues of unreliable electricity and a lack of professional facilities. It will be equipped with recording gear, production software, and instruments, offering free, booked sessions to selected applicants.
“We’re taking the studio to the talent,” says Sojah Power. “A young herder in Tonj with a melody in his heart should have the same starting chance as a kid in a capital city. This mobile unit is that first, crucial step.”
A Curriculum for the Modern Music Industry
Beyond hardware, the initiative’s educational component is its most ambitious aspect. Quarterly workshops will be held in collaboration with established East African producers, sound engineers, and music business professionals. The curriculum is meticulously designed to be both globally relevant and locally grounded.
Modules include:
· Digital Production & Engineering: Hands-on training in modern music software.
· The Business of Music: Navigating streaming platforms, understanding royalties, and building a personal brand.
· Artist Development: Vocal coaching, stage presence, and media training.
· Cultural Foundation: This unique module pairs participants with community elders and traditional musicians to document and learn indigenous rhythms, lyrical styles, and the stories behind instruments like the thom (lyre) and boul (drum). “The global sound I create is nothing without its South Sudanese soul,” Sojah Power emphasizes. “We must teach our producers to sample from our own rich archives, to build our future sound on a foundation that is authentically ours.”
Mentorship and Long-Term Vision
The program’s mentorship structure pairs each participant with an established professional in the African music scene, facilitated through virtual and in-person sessions. Sojah Power himself will serve as the lead mentor, reviewing demos and providing direct feedback.
The long-term vision is to create a self-sustaining ecosystem. “The goal isn’t just to create one more star,” he clarifies. “It’s to create a hundred skilled professionals producers, audio engineers, managers, and artists who will collaborate, compete, and elevate each other. We’re building a network that will strengthen South Sudan’s entire creative economy.”
The initiative has already garnered support from regional tech startups and a prominent pan-African music foundation. Proceeds from Sojah Power’s recent hit singles, including “Nyan Mading Aweil” and “Proud Junubi,” are providing the seed funding.
Maria Akoon, a veteran South Sudanese cultural commentator, praised the move. “Sojah Power has used his music to put us on the map. Now, with ‘Beat of Unity,’ he is diligently drawing the map for others to follow. This is transformative. He’s not just giving a performance; he’s building a stage for generations to come.”
Applications for the first 20-person cohort of “Beat of Unity” are set to open next month, with selection based on demonstrated talent, commitment, and a clear vision for their artistic journey. For Sojah Power, this initiative is the ultimate expression of his hit song “Proud Junubi.”
“Pride isn’t just a feeling; it’s an action,” he concludes, a smile in his voice. “It’s the action of turning around, reaching back, and ensuring the rhythm of our future is even more powerful than the beat of today. This is the legacy I am determined to build.”
