oppenheimer father of atomic bomb-Hero or Villan ?

Oppenheimer , who is reffered to as the " Father of Atomic bomb" was essential member of the scientific team that work on manhattan project to create the first atomic bomb during world war 2 but his legacy is not one dimensional in any way .was he a hero for his contribution to science and national duty or he a monster guilty of developing a weapon that altered the course of history?

EARLY LIFE AND HIS SCIENTIFIC CAPABILITY

Julius robert oppenheimer is known as the father of atomic bomb he was born on 22 aprail 1904 in new york in germen jewish family and he was considered a child genius since his childhood . He was studying high level physics and chemistry at the age of only 10 and he was very knowledgeable in minerology about properties of minrals. He was so knowledgeable that at the age of 12 he was invited to give a lecture at new york's mineralogical club. Later on in 1922 when he went to harvard university to study he completed his 4 years degree in 3 years .He was intersted in many subjects but his actual passion is physics .

later in 1927, at the age of 23 he did PHD. But there was a dark side hidden behind this genius .His friend said that oppenheimer had self destructive tendencies. He was a chain smoker and was suffering through depression.One day he told his brother I NEED PHYSICS MORE THAN FRIENDS.

He was focused only on his studies and remain unaware of what was happening in the world around him

WORLD WAR 2 AND MANHATTAN PROJECT

When japan attacked on 7th december 1941 on pearl harber and america officialy entered world war 2 .And now america want to develop atomic bomb .But at this point in time it becomes clear that the scientific mission of developing nuclear weapons had turns into a militry mission. America spent 2.2 billion dollors on this one project .

The american military had an engineering wing the army corps of engineers .It made ports and airfields for army.Its involvement was approved by president roosevelt in june 1942 .Now the office of the north atlantic divison was in MANHATTAN ,new york city

And when they got the responsibility to make nuclear weapons they made their headquarters in the same building on 18th floor .These headquarters were named manhattan engineer district and from this point in time the manhattan project officialy started .

The date was 13th august 1942 next month on 17th september colonel leslie richard groves was appointed as the head of this project . And he made the dicision to oppoint oppenheimer as the leader of the design of the atomic bomb . A secret location was decided to keep this project under cover oak ridge tennessee.

this city is also called the secret city because entire city was built here for this project .Thousands of scinetists ,researcher and workers moved to this city and they had only one task creating uranium-235 from uranium-238. I will not go to the details of the science of nuclear fission the point is that uranium-238 is not fisionable it can not undergo a chain reaction to make a bomb .

it was very important to extract uranium-235 . The plan was to try out 4 different methods to make uranium-235 from uranium- 238.Apart from this at a different location in washington scientist were at work producing plutonium as well .Apart from these two location they were looking for a third location for project Y. where this bomb can be design and making .

TESTING OF ATOMIC BOMB

Now there was only one obvious thing left to do practically tested atomic bomb in desert of new maxico this test bomb was called gadget.It contain 13 pounds plutonium.scientist hung gadget 100 ft in air using a steel tower. And on 16th july 1945 this bomb was detonated. This bomb was so powerfull the steel tower evaporates .

After the bomb blast mildy radioactive green coloured glass was formed which was named trinitite.After watching this oppenheimer uttered some lines "NOW I BECOME DEATH THE DESTROYER OF WORLD. I SUPPOSE WE ALL THOUGHT THAT ONE WAY OR ANOTHER ".

less than a month after the trinity test on 6th august 1945 little boy bombs was dropped on hiroshima .Then three days later another bomb was dropped on nagasaki too.

oppenheimer expressed happiness after the bomb was dropped on hiroshima .He wished that this bomb could be used against nazi germany and Hitler. But when bomb dropped on heroshima and nagasaki so oppenheimer shocked. J ROBERT OPPENHEIMER is not definitively a villain or a hero but rather a complex flawed figure whose story is that of tragic hero caught between his scientific brilliance and devasting consequences of his work on atomic bomb .we see that at end he expressed regret and guilt and becoming advocat for arms control .
