Lalbagh Fort: Dhaka’s Unfinished Mughal Masterpiece

A defining feature of the Mughal structure, and an incomplete dream, Lalbagh Fort in Old Dhaka (Bangladesh) is a striking architectural site on the Buriganga River, which was also known as fort Aurangabad. The fort was built in the late 16th century as an interpretation of the noblest, most brilliant and tragic parts of Mughal history.

🕰️ A Glimpse Into History

The construction of Lalbagh Fort was begun in 1678 AD on the orders of Prince Muhammad Azam (son of the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb) during his brief tenure as Subahdar (governor) of Bengal, with the intention of building a grand Mughal complex in Dhaka, but after only 15 months he was sent back to Delhi and the fort was not completed.

He was succeeded by his son Shaista Khan who ruled Kolkata for over 10 years, when his daughter, Iran Dukht Pari Bibi died in that fort. Because he thought it was ill-lucky to build the fort, Shaista Khan abdicated and all construction of buildings began. Today Pari Bibi’s tomb is one of the monuments at the fort.

🕌 Main Structures

The fort features three main monuments:

• Tomb of Pari Bibi The marble-domed mausoleum built in memory of the governor’s daughter.

• The Mosque – three-headed Mughal style mosque to the west.

• Diwan-i-Aam–The Hall of Public Audience where once public proceedings were held.

These buildings are connected by waterways with fountains - this is one of the classic features of the Mughal garden.

🧱 Rediscovered Architecture

Until recently the fort was thought to consist only of those three structures, however recent excavations have revealed:

• Hidden stables, residences, and administrative blocks

• A roof garden with water reservoirs

• Massive bastions and secret tunnels

Several bastions protect the fort’s defensive walls, the largest near the southern gate.
