China has a severe population crisis nowadays due to plummeting birth rate, which could cause negative and devastating consequences for long-term economic prospects.

The trend of China's birth and death population

China has a long history of population policies, dating back to the early days of the People’s Republic of China in the 1950s. The government’s goal has always been to control population growth in order to ensure economic and social stability.

The first major population policy was the “one-child policy”, which was introduced in 1979. This policy limited most families to having one child, with exceptions for ethnic minorities and rural couples with special circumstances. The one-child policy was controversial from the start, but it was enforced strictly for many years.

In 2015, the one-child policy was relaxed to allow families to have two children. This was done in an effort to address the country’s rapidly ageing population. In July 2021, all of the limits have been removed. However, the relaxation of the policy has not been enough to reverse the trend of declining birth rates.

There are a number of reasons why China has a population crisis. One reason is that the one-child policy has had a significant impact on the country’s demographics. The policy has led to a skewed gender ratio, with more men than women. This has made it difficult for many men to find wives and has contributed to an increase in social problems such as prostitution and human trafficking.

Another reason for the population crisis is that China’s economy has become increasingly urbanized. This has led to a decline in the number of young people in rural areas, where traditionally most children have been born.

Finally, China’s rising cost of living has also made it difficult for many couples to afford to have children. The cost of education, healthcare, and housing has all increased significantly in recent years.

The population crisis in China has a number of negative consequences, including:

  • A smaller workforce: The shrinking workforce is putting a strain on China’s economy. The country is facing a shortage of workers, which is making it difficult to meet the demands of its growing economy.
  • An ageing population: The ageing population is putting a strain on China’s social security system. The government is facing increasing costs to provide healthcare and pensions for the elderly.
  • A decline in innovation: The shrinking workforce and an ageing population are making it difficult for China to innovate.

The population crisis is a major blow to China’s government. To solve these challenges, the government is working on a number of solutions:

  • Improving social welfare and incomes: The government could construct a more robust and comprehensive social welfare system to dispel the worries about raising babies.
  • Providing financial incentives for couples to have more children: The government could provide financial incentives for couples to have more children, such as tax breaks and subsidies for childcare.
  • Improving the work-life balance: The government could improve the work-life balance for Chinese workers, in order to make it easier for couples to have children.
  • Promoting gender equality: The government could promote gender equality, in order to address the gender imbalance in China.

But, can these solutions save China’s future?

Almost every country’s leader is witnessing the fact that birth rates are decreasing everywhere, especially in developed countries. However, China’s population crisis is more deteriorating than most of the developed countries, it is still a developing country where the majority of people could get old before being rich. The government is still reluctant to provide more welfare to its citizens even though the Chinese have suffered a lot under the strict zero-covid policy. Perhaps the population crisis is not a crisis in the future considering the exponential growth of AI evolution.
