Bhima and Hidimba: The Battle with Hidimbasura
The story of bheema killing hidimbasura marriage with hidimba and birth of gatotkacha

The Pandavas’ Journey and the Encounter with Hidimbasura
After escaping the flames of the House of Lac, the Pandavas and their mother, Kunti, traveled through dense forests, carefully staying out of sight to avoid detection. They often found shelter in secluded groves, living off the land and surviving on whatever food they could gather. After days of travel, one evening, they reached a dark and remote part of the forest and decided to rest under the shade of a large tree.
As the Pandavas and Kunti lay down to rest, a powerful rakshasa named Hidimbasura sensed their presence. Hidimbasura, known for his cruelty and strength, lived nearby with his sister, Hidimba. The demon was feared by all who passed through the forest, as he devoured anyone who crossed his path. When he caught the scent of the Pandavas, he felt his hunger rise, and he eagerly planned to capture and consume them.
Hidimbasura turned to his sister, Hidimba, and ordered her to approach the group to find out more about them. “Go and see who these humans are,” he commanded. “They have entered our territory, and they will make a fine meal.”
Hidimba’s Change of Heart
Hidimba, though a rakshasi by birth, was not as cruel as her brother. When she approached the Pandavas, she was struck by Bhima’s appearance and strength. His noble face and powerful build captivated her, and for the first time, she felt a sense of compassion and admiration for a human. As she observed him, she felt an inner conflict—a desire to save him and his family from her brother’s wrath.
Transforming herself into a beautiful woman, Hidimba approached Bhima. She introduced herself and warned him of the danger they were in. “My brother, Hidimbasura, is a powerful demon who intends to harm you and your family,” she whispered. “He is fierce and will show no mercy. Please, wake your family and leave this place before he arrives.”
However, Bhima, known for his bravery, refused to run away. He assured Hidimba that he could protect his family and that he would face the demon head-on. Moved by his confidence and courage, Hidimba pleaded with him, saying, “I have fallen in love with you, Bhima. Please, do not risk your life. I can help you escape from my brother’s wrath.”
Despite her pleas, Bhima stood firm in his decision to protect his family. He asked her to step aside and wait, telling her that he would deal with Hidimbasura on his own.
The Battle Between Bhima and Hidimbasura
Soon, Hidimbasura arrived, furious to find his sister in conversation with his intended prey. Enraged, he rebuked her for betraying him and declared that he would kill Bhima first, then punish Hidimba for her disobedience. Bhima, undeterred by the demon’s threats, stepped forward to confront him. With a calm but firm voice, he challenged Hidimbasura, warning him to leave or face the consequences.
Hidimbasura, insulted by Bhima’s courage, attacked him with ferocious strength. The forest shook as the two clashed, with Bhima matching the demon’s blows with equal force. Their battle was intense and brutal, as each tried to overpower the other. Bhima’s strength was unparalleled, and he used his immense power and combat skills to gain the upper hand.
The fight lasted for hours, with Bhima throwing Hidimbasura to the ground repeatedly. The sounds of their struggle echoed through the forest, drawing the attention of Yudhishthira, Arjuna, and the rest of the family, who watched in awe and concern. Finally, summoning all his might, Bhima lifted Hidimbasura above his head and slammed him to the ground with tremendous force, breaking the demon’s back. In a final act of strength, Bhima crushed Hidimbasura, ending his reign of terror.
The Aftermath and Bhima’s Union with Hidimba
With Hidimbasura defeated, peace returned to the forest. The Pandavas and Kunti were relieved, and Hidimba, who had witnessed the battle, was both grateful and impressed by Bhima’s valor. She approached him again, expressing her gratitude and admiration. “You have freed this forest from my brother’s cruelty,” she said. “In you, I see a noble warrior, and my heart is drawn to you. Will you honor me by staying with me, if only for a short while?”
Kunti, understanding the loyalty and kindness that Hidimba had shown them, encouraged Bhima to honor her wish. She reminded him that Hidimba’s love was genuine and that he should consider her feelings with respect. Bhima, though reluctant at first, agreed to stay with Hidimba for a while.
Their union blessed them with a son named Ghatotkacha, who inherited his father’s strength and courage. Ghatotkacha, though part rakshasa, was loyal to the Pandavas and would go on to play a crucial role in the Kurukshetra war, fighting valiantly for his father’s side.
The Pandavas’ Departure
After some time, Bhima bid farewell to Hidimba, promising to remember her and their son with love and respect. Hidimba, understanding that his duty lay with his family, gracefully accepted his decision, knowing that Bhima’s love for his family was as strong as his bravery. She returned to her forest life, raising Ghatotkacha to be as noble and brave as his father.
