Bhagiratha began his journey by performing rigorous penance to Lord Brahma, the Creator, who had the power to guide him in bringing Ganga to Earth. He stood in meditation through rain, scorching sun, and storms, sacrificing every comfort and dedicating himself completely to his mission.
After witnessing Bhagiratha’s unwavering devotion, Brahma appeared before him and asked the king for his wish. Bhagiratha humbly requested that Ganga, the river of the heavens, be allowed to descend to Earth to cleanse his ancestors’ ashes. Brahma, moved by Bhagiratha’s devotion, granted his wish. However, he warned Bhagiratha that the mighty force of Ganga’s descent from the heavens would be too powerful for the Earth to bear, as her torrential waters could devastate the planet.
To ensure a safe descent, Brahma advised Bhagiratha to seek the help of Lord Shiva, the Supreme Destroyer, who alone could absorb and control Ganga’s immense force. Bhagiratha, now aware of the magnitude of his task, thanked Brahma and began his penance anew, this time directed toward Shiva.
Bhagiratha’s Penance to Shiva
Bhagiratha intensified his penance, praying to Lord Shiva with deep reverence and devotion. His penance was more intense than ever, as he recognized the necessity of Shiva’s aid in his mission. Bhagiratha’s dedication and selflessness touched Lord Shiva’s heart, and after a long period of meditation, Shiva appeared before him.
