Bangladesh Joins Global Space Efforts
Signs the Artemis Accords, Marking Entry into NASA's International Space Exploration Initiative
Dhaka, April 2025
The Artemis Accords, an international agreement led by NASA that outlines principles for peaceful and cooperative space exploration, have officially been signed by Bangladesh. This milestone signifies a significant advancement in Bangladesh's space science ambitions and positions the South Asian nation as an active member of the international space community.
The Artemis Accords: What Are They?
The Artemis Accords are a set of guiding principles that NASA introduced in 2020 to ensure openness, peaceful space exploration, and international cooperation. The Accords, named after NASA's Artemis program, which aims to send humans back to the Moon and eventually to Mars, emphasize responsible behavior in space, such as sharing data, ensuring systems are interoperable, preserving space heritage, and making sustainable use of resources in outer space.
By signing the Accords, countries pledge to abide by international space law, as outlined in the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, and to collaborate in developing a safe and stable environment for space activity.
A Watershed Event for Bangladesh
The Accords were signed by the Minister of Science and Technology of Bangladesh at a ceremony attended by NASA and other participating nations.
The signing demonstrates Bangladesh's growing dedication to innovation, science, and international cooperation.
The Minister said in a statement,
"This is a historic step for our nation."
"It opens the door to new scientific partnerships, technological advancements, and the chance to inspire a new generation of Bangladeshi space scientists, engineers, and innovators," according to the report.
"We are excited to have Bangladesh join us in shaping the future of space exploration," NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said of Bangladesh's decision.
"We look forward to collaborating closely with Bangladesh as we venture further into space, and the Artemis Accords represent our shared vision for peaceful exploration."
A Growing Role in Space Research
With the successful 2018 launch of Bangabandhu-1, Bangladesh's first communications satellite, the country has made steady progress in space technology.
Since then, the nation has expressed an interest in enhancing its capabilities in space science education, Earth observation, and satellite communications.
Bangladesh gains access to a wider network for knowledge sharing, joint missions, and the possibility of participating in lunar and planetary exploration programs by joining the Artemis Accords.
Joining Hands for a Shared Future
Humanity stands at a critical juncture in space exploration. As we prepare for long-duration missions to the Moon and gear up for eventual human exploration of Mars, international cooperation is more important than ever. The Artemis Accords serve as a foundation for that unity, ensuring that the benefits of space are shared broadly and equitably.
Bangladesh’s decision to join this initiative is more than symbolic; it reflects a national commitment to responsible innovation, scientific progress, and international peace. It also aligns with the country's broader vision of becoming a technology-driven economy and a regional leader in innovation.
In an increasingly interconnected world, the challenges of space—ranging from orbital debris management to sustainable resource utilization—require collaborative solutions. Bangladesh’s participation in this multilateral framework brings a fresh perspective and adds value to the global space community.
Motivating Future Generations
The agreement is expected to energize interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields across the country.
Universities and research institutions in Bangladesh will now have more opportunities to collaborate with international space agencies, opening doors for joint research, internships, and academic exchanges.

Looking Forward
Global cooperation has never been more important as humanity gets closer to returning to the Moon and exploring Mars.
Bangladesh’s decision to align with the Artemis Accords signals its readiness to contribute to and benefit from this new era of space exploration.
By taking this action, Bangladesh not only becomes a member of a group of nations that share similar values, but it also flies a symbolic flag among the stars, reiterating that all humans share responsibility for the future of space.
