KRAKOA IS FOR CLOSERS! The deals have been made. Mutantkind is safe on Krakoa. As the Reign of X continues, what are the wants of the mutants who have everything? Leading the charge is X-CORPORATION, headed by CXOs Monet St. Croix and Warren Worthington, a duo as cutthroat and ruthless in the boardroom as they are on a battlefield. But X-Corp needs more than just its figureheads. As Monet sets out to staff their team with some of the brightest and most deviant minds in mutantkind, Warren finds himself in a tense meeting with one of Krakoa’s first allies who wants to know the truth: on Angel’s wings, will X-Corp crash or soar?
While I’ve stopped being a fan of the Marvel’s Mighty Mutants for quite some time now but the description of the series had me intrigued. Warren has had so many iterations over the years and to see him be this kind of CXO alongside Monet is one that I think brings him back to his early roots if you will. He has the experience and long gone is his carefree attitude and schoolboy charm that comes with his good looks and it’s replaced by this newer harder man who knows how to get what he wants. So yeah I’m in for now and Tini has my full attention.
I like the way that this is being told. The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information really presented extremely well. The character development that we see is amazing and Monet being who she is is depicted perfectly as this no nonsense hard as nails and hard to deal with character. Warren is the perfect counterbalance to her and it’s nice to see their interacts and how they play off one another. The pacing is superb and as it takes us through the pages revealing the story it raises the intrigue factor in the reader exponentially with each turn of the page.
I like the way that this is being structured and how we see the layers within the story playing out. Some of which are new to this book others from various X-Books already in full swing. How we see everything working together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it moves the story forward is achieved extremely well.
The interiors here are really strong. I like how we see the linework and how the varying weights are utilised to create the detail work. I will say i’d like to see more definition in Warren’s wings it’s te only part that feels too loose and cartoonish to me. I’d also like to see backgrounds being utilised more often as when we do see them they do wonders in enhancing the moments. The composition within the panels bring us some nice depth perception, a sense of scale and that overall sense of size and scope to the book. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a solid eye for storytelling. The colour work is well done also. How we see the various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work is achieved very nicely.
The book is already assembling a nice diverse cast of characters all of whom bring their own unique talents and perspective to the team. I’m looking forward to seeing who all becomes the X-Corp board and how their personalities will bring new aspects to the storytelling. Tini is a magnificent writer and she has a great handle on these characters already so I’m eagerly awaiting what she has in store for this series and what direction she’s going to take us.
