Why did I watch these anime?

My personal opinion on anime I hated (Part 2)

By animetipzPublished about a year ago 8 min read

I have a curse. Whenever I start an anime I have to finish it. I am not sure why I am like that. Maybe I secretly hope it will get better or I’d rather check it off as finished so I don’t feel like it was a complete waste of time. Either way, it is a curse and I have finished some pretty bad anime (In my opinion) Let’s talk about them, shall we?

**SPOILER WARNING**

These aren’t in any order or any particular genre. I’ll give you a little bit of the storyline and then my opinions which will have spoilers. This will be a long list so I am going to break it into two parts. I promise the last 2 will surprise you.

Make sure to read part 1

I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.

A Sign of Affection

Storyline: Yuki Itose is just a typical student dealing with the pressures of college. She is struggling one day on the train when an upperclassman named Itsuomi Nagi helps her out. As he gradually opens a new world to her, Yuki develops feelings for Itsuomi. A pure love story begins to grow.

My thoughts: Let me start by saying this wasn’t the worst show and it might not deserve to be on this list. So why did I hate it? It felt boring and rushed at the same time. Typically romance anime takes place in high school, When I was in high school I loved them. Now as an adult, I still enjoy them but don’t feel that same connection. When I heard a sign of affection with college students around my age I wanted to see it. I was disappointed, to say the least. I have heard amazing things about the manga, which makes me wonder if the storyline gets better as it goes along. Personally, I didn’t like their love story, felt like he pressured her and that she was gullible. When the friend’s love story has more depth than the main characters it shows how little I connected with this show.

7 Deadly Sins

Storyline: The kingdom of Liones is thrown into turmoil when the king’s Holy Knights are corrupted by a distinctly unholy demonic power. The land’s only hope is a band of powerful warriors known as The Seven Deadly Sins — an exiled group of oddballs who seem to spend as much time fighting each other as they do fighting their enemies. Princess Elizabeth desperately seeks their aid, but the leader of her would-be saviors turns out to be an undersized pervert with a broken blade and a talking pig! They are soon joined by a jealous giant, a fussy fairy, and an immortal bandit pining over his lost love. Can these people be the legendary heroes she’s looking for?

My thoughts: I saw this anime everywhere, I heard it was amazing from several people and finally gave in to giving it a try. After the first few episodes I wasn’t impressed, with the basic story, and annoying female characters, but I figured I would give it the benefit of the doubt and watched all of season 1. It is safe to say I won’t be watching anymore. I’m sure the storyline gets better but something that makes or breaks an anime for me is the female characters. There are some badass, adorable, brave, goofy, and incredible female anime characters. The one quality I can’t stand is whiny female anime characters. I might be able to handle one in a show but all the female leads were insanely whiny and it honestly ruined the show for me. I can even handle some fan service because I know that there is going to be some level in almost every anime but the whiny characters made me not want to watch anymore.

Did I judge this anime too soon? Should I give season 2 a try?

Diabolik Lovers

Storyline: A girl arrives at an old mystical house to live there. Inside the house, she quickly discovers that the inhabitants, 6 brothers, are vampires and that she is meant to be their bridal slave.

My thoughts: I am going to do combined thoughts on Diabolik Lovers and Vampire Knight below because I have very similar views on them both.

Vampire Knight

Storyline: Vampire Knight tells the story of Yuki Cross. The earliest thing she remembers is being attacked on a snowy night by a vampire, and being rescued by Kaname Kuran, who is also a vampire. The story takes place 10 years after that event, Yuki is now the adopted daughter of the Headmaster of Cross Academy. She and her longtime friend Zero Kiryu keep peace at the academy, making sure no problems arise between the Day Class (humans) and the Night Class (vampires). However, the peace they try to keep is fragile, and personal feelings begin to interrupt their duty.

My thoughts: Every teenage girl in the 2010s had a vampire phase right? Although I didn’t get into Twighlight I got into vampire romance anime. After watching Diabolik Lovers and Vampire Knight I wish I had been into Twilight instead. These shows take creepy to a whole new level, and the fact that I watched these in high school and was creeped out says a lot. I know there are fans of Vampire Knight and it was popular, which is why I not only watched the anime but read the manga as well. I don’t understand why these genres were so popular because they were just all-around bad. Unlike Twilight fans, I will never talk about or say that I watched either of these shows out of embarrassment.

Last two!! Don’t hate me on these picks, again it is just my opinion.

Cyberpunk Edgerunners

Storyline: A street kid tries to survive in a technology and body modification-obsessed city of the future. Having everything to lose, he chooses to stay alive by becoming an edge runner — a mercenary outlaw also known as a cyberpunk.

My thoughts: Let me start by saying I never played the game. I had no idea what this show would be about and had no previous connection to the story. When this anime came out I saw it everywhere. This looked like such a sick show I was so hyped to see it. Since it is on this list it is safe for you to assume I did not think it lived up to the hype. The only part of this anime that I liked was the animation, it was colorful and edgy but other than that I can’t think of anything else I like. I felt no connection to the characters, which meant I didn’t care when they died. The sex in the show caught me off guard, I don’t care about sex scenes or fan service, It’s going to happen in anime, however, these popped up out of nowhere and added nothing to the storyline. I felt as if the timeline and story were all over the place and it was hard to follow. I did think the ending was shocking, I saw it coming from a mile away, but it was sweet that she got to go to the moon.

Maybe it just wasn’t my taste in anime but I was disappointed after I finished it, because I kept waiting for it to get better. Even though it wasn’t for me everyone else seemed to like it. It was one of the most popular anime of 2022 and highest-ranked. You might like it, but I did not.

Black Butler

Storyline: In Victorian England, it is commonplace for the wealthy to have a staff, led by a head butler, to run their households; the Phantomhive Estate is no different. The young and demanding Count Ciel Phantomhive, the child owner of a toy company, lives in the grand countryside manor. Sebastian is his head butler and the epitome of perfection; he effortlessly and gracefully completes his day-to-day chores and fixes the countless mistakes of the other employees. However, whilst on the outside, all seems prim and proper, a more sinister secret lies just beneath the surface. Sebastian is a demon bound by a contract with the young count; he will loyally serve and fight for him in return for his soul.

My thoughts: I am ashamed to admit that I even gave this anime a try, But I lived through Black Bulter’s first release and it was huge. It was impossible to escape and after I fought it off for a while a friend forced me to watch it. At the time they only had season 1 and I watched the whole thing against my will. I couldn’t even describe the emotions I felt but I would have rather had lemon juice squeezed in my eyes than watch another minute of this show. I didn’t connect to the story, felt weirded out by the characters, and had to watch another show after finishing season 1 to get the thoughts of this show out of my mind so I could sleep. At the time I seemed to be the only one who thought this show was horrible, but as the years went on I have seen more and more people saying they also hated it. I feel as if Black Butler has a specific and loyal fanbase, which is not me. I remember my friend was in love with Sebastian and I believe the show didn’t matter to her. As long as Sebastian was on the screen the story could have been about dancing bananas (Which would have been better than the actual story) and she would have raved about it. Maybe the show got better, I believe a new season came out this year. Even if it got significantly better I will not be watching it.

It was the most creepy and cringy thing that I have ever seen and it did not live up to the insane hype it got.

These are my opinions and you are allowed to have your opinions too. One of the things I love about anime is the wide variety of stories, genres, animation styles, creativity, etc. I have finished well over 200 shows, and the fact I could only put together a short list says a lot about anime as a whole. Yes, you can not like some shows but there are thousands more that you could love. No two anime are alike, which makes it impossible to hate anime.

What anime did you hate? Do you agree or disagree with any of the ones I listed?

All the movies in chronological order pt. 1

As many people did, I started my Studio Ghibli addiction with the famous spirited away. After watching that masterpiece I was HOOKED! I had to hunt down and watch every movie they created. The creator of most of the films Hayao Miyazaki brought a breathtaking world to our TVs. Every story is unique, and when you rewatch them another meaning comes to light. Character development is in each movie, with strong female leads. Heart-stopping art will make you want to be teleported into the wonderful world of Studio Ghibli.
