“When Harry Met Sally (1989)”

Some movies sweep you off your feet. Others? They quietly sneak up on you, making you smile and feel right at home. “When Harry Met Sally” is definitely the latter. It isn’t about grand romantic gestures or dramatic twists — it’s about the simple, messy, beautiful way friendships slowly turn into love.

Directed by Rob Reiner and written by the brilliant Nora Ephron, this film starts with a simple question: Can men and women ever really be just friends? It’s a question that keeps weaving through the story, but instead of giving a quick answer, the movie lets it simmer over years — through random run-ins, late-night calls, heartbreaks, and lots of witty conversations.

We first meet Harry (Billy Crystal) and Sally (Meg Ryan) in 1977, when they share a long, awkward car ride from Chicago to New York. Harry’s sarcastic and a bit of a pessimist, while Sally’s more hopeful, cheerful, and well… particular. Their banter during that first road trip is hilarious — Harry bluntly shares his thoughts on love and sex, and Sally tries to politely dodge his cynicism. They’re total opposites, but somehow, you can already tell they’ll cross paths again.

And they do. Over the years, we watch them stumble through life — bad breakups, failed relationships, and that lingering feeling of loneliness. One of the most relatable scenes comes when Sally breaks down in tears after learning her ex is getting married. She calls Harry in a moment of vulnerability, and you can feel their friendship shifting — it’s messy, emotional, and so honest.

Of course, there’s that famous scene — the one in the diner, where Sally hilariously demonstrates just how convincingly women can fake certain things (wink wink). It’s playful and unforgettable, topped with the classic line: “I’ll have what she’s having.” It’s still one of the most iconic movie moments ever.

But it’s not just about the laughs. The heart of this movie lies in its quieter scenes — their long talks about life, love, and fears. Whether they’re walking through Central Park with autumn leaves underfoot or watching late-night movies in their separate apartments while chatting on the phone, you really feel their bond growing. It’s not forced or rushed — it’s slow, natural, and so real.

Then there’s the ending. Oh, that ending. Harry’s speech at the New Year’s Eve party isn’t some perfectly polished romcom moment. It’s slightly rambling, nervous, but full of heart. He tells Sally, “I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.” It’s the kind of line that gives you that warm, fuzzy feeling in your chest.

The movie’s look is simple but lovely — New York City becomes this quiet companion in the background, changing with the seasons as Harry and Sally change too. And the soundtrack, full of soft jazz tunes by Harry Connick Jr., makes everything feel even more cosy and nostalgic, like a comforting old song you never get tired of.

What really makes When Harry Met Sally stand out is how relatable it is. It doesn’t glamorize love — it shows the awkward, funny, vulnerable parts too. It’s about two imperfect people who learn, slowly and beautifully, that sometimes the best relationships grow from friendship.

Honestly? I’m a little biased because this movie holds such a soft spot in my heart. Objectively, it’s probably a solid 4.3 out of 5 for its clever writing and timeless charm. But for me, it’s a personal 4.8 — because it just gets the magic of falling in love with your best friend.

If you’re in the mood for a romcom that feels like a warm hug — full of heart, humour, and honesty — When Harry Met Sally is absolutely worth your time.
