Twisters
Review

We went to go see Twisters this past weekend. Glen Powell really can generate chemistry with absolutely nothing. There were parts that were funny, and entertaining and even actually good. That said, not even Glen’s incredible magnetism could save this movie from mediocrity. There was really nothing extremely wrong with the film but there was also nothing extremely good about it. So let’s talk about Twisters.
First things first it was beautifully shot. If you are going to make a film about storm chasers you need to make the audience feel the storm. And they certainly did that. The cinematography was great and all of the weather effects were very impactful. It was pretty to look at if nothing else.
Then we have the fact that Glen Powell is actually a very good actor. His expressions are great and I really wish he would do something serious. He keeps doing goofy movies like this, and he is great in them but I really want him to push his abilities and see what he could do with a movie of a higher quality. The chemistry between his character and Kate was really one sided. I think she’s a fine actress. The problem is that the romance between them seemed to really only come from Tyler. He seemed very into her and she seemed very into tornadoes. I don’t actually hate that dynamic but I don’t think that it was executed very well. I think that there only point of connection was storm chasing and without it there would be no kind of relationship.
Okay let’s get to the fun stuff…let’s start at the very beginning. So the whole Kate loses all of her friends in a tornado thing should be very sad, but here’s the thing; if you do something stupid like chase tornadoes you kinda get what you get. I don’t feel bad for stupid people. People that die while spelunking, or storm chasing 100% did that to themselves. And then Kate deciding to storm chase again 5 years later just really hammers home the stupid.
The actual story is also very loose. StormPar working for a real estate developer was very expected but the actual reveal to Kate was really weak. What was kind of framed as this big betrayal really fell flat because there was no actual tension. I am also just really tired of seeing Anthony Ramos in things. His face bothers me and his acting ability outside of musical theatre is really nonexistent. His role seemed to exist only to spur Kate’s story which wouldn’t be a problem if he wasn’t set up to be an actual supporting character.
We know that I really hate movies that could have been really good. I think wasted potential is probably the worst crime that a film can commit. This film could have been a really great story about grief, PTSD, moving on from loss and rediscovering love and passion. And instead the movie was none of those things. It really was just about storm chasing and it was very surface level.
Overall, it was a movie. It wasn’t terrible and it most definitely wasn’t good but it will live in middle tier mediocrity forever. I give it a very generous and solid 5/10, Glen Powell really carried the movie on his back. The supporting characters that were a part of Tyler's crew were really good. They were fun and interesting. My only complaint was just that there wasn’t enough of them. Now I am fundamentally against remakes so that doesn’t help this movie's case either. The movie was really just okay.
