What are your favorite films from this year?

Thanks for joining me for my best movies of 2025. I went to the theaters a lot this year. What movies made your favorite list? Let’s get started on the movies I enjoyed this year, starting with movies that were already released.
BEST FILMS
Other films
5. The Visitor (2007), Director: Tom McCarthy, Actors: Richard Jenkins, Haaz Sleiman, Danai Gurira
The Visitor is an impactful story about a real situation going on in the world right now. This is a film about making connections. Walter (Richard Jenkins) teaches viewers how to be better when they find what makes them happy. Life won’t always turn out the way it’s expected, but The Visitor enforces how you must try new things. This film deserves more audience.
4. The Hollars (2016), Director/Star: John Krasinski, Actors: Margo Martindale, Richard Jenkins, Sharlto Copley
Hospital stories are so relatable that watching them feels like a home movie. The Hollars is a darkly comical film about a family reconnecting during hard times. John Krasinski, Margot Martindale, Richard Jenkins, and Sharlto Copley have a solid dynamic that feels so real. It makes you laugh, smile, and cry. You never know, this may be the film someone needs to remind them that they’re not alone.
3. The Last Word (2017), Director: Mark Pellington, Actors: Shirley MacLaine and Amanda Seyfried
I immediately said ‘yes’ to The Last Word when I watched the trailer. The Last Word contains all the comedy, heartfelt drama, and joys of life. Shirley MacLaine and Amanda Seyfried made an excellent acting duo. Have you ever thought about what someone will write about you? The Last Word highlights the world of journalism. It’s an uplifting and heartwarming story that made me feel thankful for life.
Phoebe in Wonderland (2008), Director: David Barnz, Actors: Elle Fanning, Patricia Clarkson
I searched down every rabbit hole for Phoebe in Wonderland, and I am so happy that I watched it on YouTube. Phoebe in Wonderland is a thought-provoking look into the world of mental illness and the positive impacts of theater. Elle Fanning is splendid as Phoebe in her debut lead performance. Daniel Barnz’s direction created a beautiful film with magnificent performances, a bold story, and a hopeful light.
The Broken Hearts Gallery (2020), Director: Natalie Krinsky, Actors: Geraldine Viswanathan, Dacre Montgomery
I love this movie. I wish I had found it sooner! The Broken Hearts Gallery is about love, adulthood, and careers. Geraldine Viswanathan showcases the remarkable depth and energy of her character. This film tracks all the right roads; yes, you will make mistakes, but you can always take another pathway to achieve your goals. I highly recommend this film.
2025 Films - And now we make our way to 2025 films.
5. Good Fortune, Director/Star: Aziz Ansari, Actors: Keanu Reeves and Seth Rogan
I really enjoyed Good Fortune, and I thought it had a heartwarming moral. Keanu Reeves, Aziz Ansari, and Seth Rogan make a talented and hilarious trio. We’ve all wished that we could live someone else’s life or choose a different pathway. Just because things aren’t going your way right now doesn’t mean they always will. It’s a comical and heartwarming film.
4. Bob Trevino Likes It, Director: Tracie Laymon, Actors: Barbie Ferrera and John Leguizamo
I first saw Bob Trevino Likes It in 2024 at the New Hampshire Film Festival, but I didn’t have the chance to fully talk about it until its release this year. This is a heartwarming story about friendship. Barbie Ferrera and John Leguizamo are fantastic in their performances, exhibiting genuine growth. I actually watched this film four times this year, in theaters, with friends, and my grandmother. We’re all going to be okay, and that’s what truly matters.
3. Dying for Sex, Creators: Elizabeth Meriwether and Kim Rosenstock, Actors: Michelle Williams and Jenny Slate
This is a series I never expected to find myself watching or be on my favorites list. Michelle Williams and Jenny Slate give commendable and bold performances. The series combines two topics people are often hesitant to talk about: cancer and sex. We’re allowed to make our own decisions in life as long as they’re true to ourselves. Dying for Sex is for mature audiences, so watch it with your own discretion. The series is not for everyone, but I found it healing.
Sinners, Director: Ryan Coogler, Actors: Michael B. Jordan, Hailee Steinfeld
One word to describe Sinners: Cool. Sinners is an astonishing film with rich narratives about race, music, and dark fantasy. The whole cast is fantastic, but Michael B. Jordan’s performance as twins, Smoke and Stack, deserves a Best Actor nomination. Sinners is amazing. If you haven’t seen it, walk into it totally blind.
Eleanor the Great, Director: Scarlett Johansson, Actors: June Squibb and Erin Kellyman
Eleanor the Great is my favorite movie of 2025. This is a heartwarming movie about friendship, being your true self, and journalism. The 95-year-old June Squibb is wonderful as Eleanor. Nina (Erin Kellyman) has become one of my favorite characters of the year, for her authentic passion for journalism. Scarlett Johannason directed a beautiful story to witness about keeping stories alive.
