Much like many other people in the country at the moment I've been making my through the many movie options on Netflix (its been a great way to pass the time during lockdown, I'd recommend it). So, I've always been a big sci-fi fan and enjoy most sci-fi movies that come out, which is what brought me to the many sci-fi movies that Netflix has to offer and in particular this movie.

From reading the synopsis it looked like the kind of bizarre movie that I needed at the time; it promised a great concept and wonderful strange sci-fi tropes that have been shown on film many times so would make for an easy watch. If I'm remembering correctly, I'm sure the image Netflix used for the film square was equally bizarre and made me want to see what this film had to offer.

Synopsis...

A group of students in a remote area of Texas searching for their missing professor. They then discover a mysterious cave by accident. While exploring the cave, the group experience a series of bizarre and dangerous events related to time and space distortion.

What did I think?

Lord above! This was just the weirdest movie I have ever watched. There was so much going on that it was one wild ride from start to finish. Now, don't get me wrong, I very much enjoyed watching it, but good lord it was awful as well.

Firstly, the plot just kept providing more weird time related issues with each scene. It wasn't long before the young characters were trapped in a time distortion (which is apparently when time moves slower in the cave). Hilariously, it wasn't even the strange time events that went off - it was more how easily the young characters figured out everything that was going on and took it in their stride.

Secondly, the thing that I could never get over was the age of the chracters that were involved in the film. They were meant to be graduates of what I assume was architecture and they seemed to understand how time works in the cave with ease. It was kind of frustrating as I would've expected characters of this age to be slightly more freaked out and unsure as to what the hell was happening to them.

And yet, I still really enjoyed watching it. As rubbish as some parts of the movie were, I was just really enjoying myself. It had all the best sci-fi tropes pushed into one movie to the point where I could just watch with ease.

Favourite moments...

  • Weirdly entertaining: despite its downfalls, I still found myself really enjoying this movie. Even the most cliche sci-fi elements made for a great watch and helped me get through yet another day of lockdown. Although, it isn't the greatest movie in the world, its an easy watch and does have enough action to ease you through the hour and a half its on.
  • Great concept: In the end, I thoroughly enjoyed the concept of the movie was trying to get across (I mean its why I chose to watch it in the end). I've always been a fan of sci-fi movies so a lot of the tropes you see in this movie just made me happy to be watching the movie.

Overall...

Now, as I have said repeatedly throughout this review, the movie overall wasn't exactly great. The ending was very odd and didn't ever really show how the characters would've felt.

However, having said these negative things - I still enjoyed watching the movie; its was one of those its so rubbish its great kind of films. There is a chance I'll probably watch it again; on a rainy day or if I ever need something easy to have on in the background while I do something else.
