'The Wizard of Oz' is a Musical Gem at North Shore Music Theatre
This show is an incredible performance.

Follow the yellow brick road.
North Shore Music Theatre presents The Wizard of Oz, a timeless classic based on the story written by L. Frank Baum. Dorothy Gale and her dog, Toto, are swept up by a twister and land in the magical world of Oz. With the help of new friends, they journey to meet the mysterious wizard to return Dorothy home.
The Wizard of Oz has enchanted imaginations for several generations. After performing it on their stage over a decade ago, North Shore Music Theatre returns with a magical, heartfelt, and whimsical production of The Wizard of Oz. This show is an incredible performance, showcasing amazing talents, impressive technical work, and celebrating the magic of theater.
Bridget Delaney shines as Dorothy Gale, a young girl who feels misunderstood and dreams of a world to run away to. Delaney is remarkable in the role, highlighting her passion for theater, especially in the iconic song ‘Over the Rainbow.’ Dorothy learns a valuable lesson about the importance of family, friends, and appreciating the life she has.
In her Oz adventures, Dorothy befriends three companions: a scarecrow searching for a brain, a tin man longing for a heart, and a lion who wishes for courage. These iconic roles are brought to life by the talented trio of Ethan Carlson (Scarecrow), Sean Bell (Tin Man), and E. Mani Cadet (Cowardly Lion). They also play Hunk, Hickory, and Zeke.
Carlson has a spring in his step, doing several cartwheels, somersaults, and handstands in a lively rendition of “If I Only Had a Brain.’ Bell embodies the Tin Man’s robotic movements, especially in his song, ‘If I Only Had a Heart.” As for Cadet, he steals the show, adding sass, hysterical comedy, and a powerhouse performance in ‘King of the Forest.’
Several talented actors play dual roles. Kerry Conte brings warmth to the bubbly Glinda and the nurturing Aunt Em. Ian Lowe is splendid as Uncle Henry and the Emerald City Guard.
Michele Ragusa is a dark delight in her unforgettable performance as the Wicked Witch of the West, manifesting a sinister cackle.
The great, talented, and notable David Coffee delivers a sensational performance as Professor Marvel and the mysterious wizard. Audiences laughed at an amusing reference to his cherished role of Ebenezer Scrooge in A Christmas Carol.
A furry friend also joins the tale. The adorable and very well-trained Bug Minnie plays Dorothy’s dog, Toto.
NSMT’s ensemble is the ultimate definition that no small part exists in the theater. This production adds more scenes for the cast to shine. Ensemble acts as a ruthless twister, pecking pigeons, sassy apple trees, the witches' winkie guards, and monkeys. A marvelous children’s ensemble dances around as the munchkins of Oz.
The technical work truly brings audiences to the world of Oz. The stage is colorful and glowing. Technical work soars in lighting design, sets, makeup work, and stunning costumes. It’s impressive how fast cast members go through quick changes. That is the magic of theater.
Choreographer Briana Fallon creates excellent dance numbers, particularly in ‘Jitterbug.’ A live orchestra conducted by Matthew Stern scores the beloved music of The Wizard of Oz. Audiences bopped their heads to ‘Follow the Yellow Bring Road,’ ‘We’re Off to See the Wizard,’ and ‘Merry Old Land of Oz.’
Robert W. Schneider puts so much heart into this production. Although the story is over a century old, NSMT’s The Wizard of Oz delights audiences of several generations. I loved seeing kids marvel at the magic of the theater.
Put on your ruby slippers and head down the yellow brick road to North Shore Music Theatre's marvelous production of The Wizard of Oz. It ends on July 20.
