The Rip

Review

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck have reignited their friendship with their newest film together, The Rip. The Netflix film is based on true events and brings Hollywood's favorite best friends back together.

We are dropped right in the middle of the tension, normally when you are dropped in the middle of a scene that has already started, it's direct action. But sometimes you get lucky enough to be dropped in the middle of a conversation and that’s always better. Because instead of being bombarded with action you have no context for, you are dropped in the middle of a feeling. In this case we are feeling tension and urgency, which is an excellent way to start a film.

Their characters seem to be friends but they also have very opposing goals. Though they are similarly motivated by their loved ones.

This is a great example of why knowing your rights is extremely important, she signed the consent to search, once they are in her home they need no further checks and balances to do whatever they want. The dog gives them probable cause. So everyone, don’t let random cops in your home without a warrant.

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck do have great chemistry, they have very clearly been friends for decades and it allows them to have such a clear working relationship. They feed off of each other, and work off of each other so well.

Oof another cop is coming up on their scene. Patrol cops getting snarky with detectives is certainly bold. Sure they’re dirty detectives but these cops look crooked as hell too. Dirty cops getting caught up with the cartel.

I actually love that this isn’t an action movie. It's more of a cop thriller and I greatly appreciate growing tension and tight dialogue writing more than I will ever care for punching and explosions. This might be one of Ben Affleck’s better roles, I think he is sort of hit or miss as an actor but when he’s with Matt Damon, he is so much stronger.

I also like that these brothers clearly do not get along, but they do have a sense of duty and responsibility to the job. It's interesting that Matt Damon’s character is the one with the acronym tattooed on his hands, “Are we the good guys?”He struggles with a sense of morality while doing this job.

I also love these contained stories. It's not quite a locked door but all of the action for most of the movie happens in a concentrated area. I love those, I think those kinds of stories are harder to write and execute well because you have to keep it interesting and you don’t get help from the setting.

There are a lot of dynamics happening in this group as far as who is turning on who. But it's written really well, and the twists are delivered at a decent pace.

Oh the cartel wasted no time whatsoever, they just started chewing up that house. These cops are too unconcerned about this poor little girl handcuffed to this chair. She didn’t do nothing.

I appreciate them actually speaking spanish, if we’re in south Miami then yeah you need to speak spanish.

Tension has peaked, Dane and J.D. are now at each other's throats because I am now convinced that it was Dane that killed J.D.’s girlfriend. He’s a dirty piece of shit. But this movie is doing a great job of exploring not only what a dirty cop looks like but how the team around the dirty cop responds. And now I am starting to question the integrity of the feds also.

They really left the girls there with a house of fire. That’s fucking insane. And now shit is really about to hit the fan I can tell. These two flushing out the actual dirty cop is incredible. Just some best friends doing best friends shit. This is the boy version of Do Revenge and I kind of love it. It's so cutesy.

Truly amazing cop thriller, I am really in love with how tight this writing is. The dialogue, the twists, the tension, all so impeccably written. These kinds of movies really aren’t my vibe normally and I go into any Ben Affleck project with a healthy heap of skepticism but damn this is undeniably good. Truly a 10/10 for what it was. Definitely worth the watch.
