The Great Anime Debate — Subbed vs Dubbed

Which do you prefer and why?

By animetipzPublished about a year ago 3 min read

There are two ways to watch anime, and it has been debated for as long as I can remember which way is best. I have seen anime both subbed and dubbed, So I am going to give my thoughts on both and then which I prefer.

I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.

Subbed

People swear it is the only way to appreciate anime, which I can understand. Anime is primarily created and written in Japanese, which means you are going to get the full dialogue and story watching it subbed. Japanese voice actors also put English voice actors to shame. They pull out all of the stops when it comes to their performance. Just watch clips comparing the two and you will hear the raw passion and talent in the Japanese voice actors.

Even though you are getting the full, true, authentic experience watching subbed it can also be less enjoyable. You can learn to read and appreciate what is happening on the screen but it does take time. Sometimes your eyes can be glued to a fight scene and your eyes are straining going from reading to watching. I have the utmost respect for people who only watch subbed anime.

Dubbed

Anime can be translated and dubbed in many languages, however, I am going to be talking about English dubbed. The fact that Anime has become more mainstream in America I have noticed a huge jump in the efforts put forth by English voice actors. Sometimes you will get a dry performance but for the most part, I am extremely impressed by the rewriting and acting to create dubbed anime.

It takes countless hours of hard work to translate an anime’s script and then rewrite it to make sense in English and then make it match up with the mouth as much as possible. I have to give props to those people making it easier for others to watch anime in their native languages.

Which do I prefer?

Although I have watched both shows and movies subbed and dubbed I much prefer dubbed anime. My dyslexic brain really struggles with subtitles. I can read just fine, and read tons of books, however, I can’t read and watch at the same time without pausing the screen. You can imagine the irritation of pausing to read the dialogue and still appreciate the anime. I just want to enjoy the anime and not work for it. I also enjoy watching anime doing everyday tasks, such as cooking, or working out. I might not have my focus 100% on the screen so being able to still listen and follow along with the story is very important to me.

I will always pick dubbed over subbed. If it is an anime I want to watch badly with only a subbed version I will but other than that I am only watching it if it is dubbed.

Which do you prefer? Are you a subbed or dubbed anime watcher? I want to hear your thoughts in the comments below

Ninja Kamui: Did It Live Up to the Expectations?

I was beyond excited when I saw the trailer for Ninja Kamui. It looked action-packed and some of the craziest animation I had seen. However, it let me down big time. Let’s talk about it.

The Evolution of Anime in the Age of Mainstream Popularity

You can imagine my culture shock jumping back into anime. When I watched anime it was on questionable sites or in 16 parts on YouTube, Now anime is on every streaming platform, with many of these streaming sights creating their anime as well. No one knew what anime or manga was and you’d be made fun of if you talked about it, now it is talked about everywhere. I see celebrities talk about anime, references made at the Olympics and more people with anime merch out and about. Titles like Demon Slayer and Jujutisu Keisen are seen everywhere. When the Demon Slayer manga dropped it sold more copies than all of Marvel and DC comics combined that year. My head spins thinking about how normal it is for someone to get into anime now.

Let’s see some of the pros and cons of anime going mainstream!

Bye for now!!
