The Detective is Already Dead: Plot Twists That Keep You Guessing

Spoil-Free Anime Review

By animetipzPublished about a year ago 3 min read

I came across this anime from an Instagram post. It came out in 2021 and I have no idea how it isn’t more popular. I have recently been getting into mystery anime. When well written it can get my heart pounding and brain racing to figure out how the story is going to play out. If you are a thrill seeker who loves a plot twist this anime is for you.

The Detective is already dead

Storyline: Follows Kimihiko Kimitsuka, a young man who four years ago became the assistant of a mysterious detective known as “Siesta” on a hijacked airplane. Together, Kimihiko and Siesta went on mind-boggling, globe-trotting adventures while combatting a secret organization, but all of that came to an end when they were separated by Siesta’s death. In the present day, Kimihiko tries to return to an ordinary, boring life as a high school student, but things are never that simple, even though the detective is already dead.

Info: 12 Episodes

Genre: Mystery, Drama, Romance

Rated: TV-14

The first episode threw me for a loop. We think the story is playing out in front of us, yet the end sentence leaves us with a huge plot twist. The twists after that became even more shocking. I am one of those annoying people who can guess the ending of any show or movie, yet this show kept me guessing. I thought this was very well-written and creative.

The female characters sometimes would get on my nerves. They are overly cute and it can be annoying at times. This has such diverse female leads, yet besides the detective Siesta, they seemed to have the same personality. I wish they weren’t as cute and were more intense like Siesta. This didn’t ruin the show for me, I am someone who will just always notice the female leads.

the art is a little basic, however they go all out for the fight scenes. Animation isn’t a make or break for me, however, I do enjoy it when an anime has a unique art style.

The last episode had my jaw on the floor, so of course as soon as it ended I am googling when there will be a season 2. Season 2 has been confirmed and is in the making. After that suspenseful ending, I am beyond excited for this story to continue.

Ratings:

IMDb: 5.9/10

Anime-Planet: 3.2/5

My Review: This is an underrated show. For it being 12 episodes they jam-pack it with plot twists, characters, and monsters. As soon as I thought I had figured out where the story was going I was completely wrong. The largest plot twist is in the anime title ‘The detective is already dead’ yet I didn’t see it coming from a mile away. Be prepared to sit for a few hours because once you start it will be hard to stop watching.

Organizing Your Anime: My Methods for Tracking and Completing Anime

Let’s get it out of the way, I am a freak. I first started watching anime in 2013ish. I realized quickly that there were too many anime I wanted to watch to keep track of them all. I also found it annoying to try and remember which episode you were on in a show, it would take the fun out of watching it by trying to remember and starting an episode only to realize you had already watched it.

A Fairy Tale Fail: Reign of the Seven Spell Blades

As the year comes to a close I start looking at the list of anime I have started throughout the year and watch the last episodes to finish them and start the new year fresh. This was one of those anime I started in January of this year. I tried to finish it again in the middle of the year, but finally just finished it. Let’s understand why I thought this anime was a miss for me.

Bye for now!

At first I was on the fence about "The Detective is Already Dead." But I'm glad I stayed true to giving an anime 3 episodes before ditching it. I agree there are a lot of plot twists. At times I enojyed the slower, highly inteleectualized aspect of this anime. Other times, it seemed like the dialogue was leading to nowhere. Great write up about this newish anime!
