A movie review

"A scientist tries to save his son and humanity, when the global warming leads to terrible natural disasters at the beginning of a new ice age."

The world society has gone too far. People neglected global warming, the only thing they did was preaching but it hasn't helped stop the process, and its threatening consequences are already knocking on the door.

It looks like mother nature has had enough...

This science fiction movie, made by the well-known director of Independence Day was presented in 2004 and successfully amazed lots of people (including me) since then.

I like watching movies that display various natural disasters, or global diseases caused by exaggeratedly powerful and distructive viruses. These are usually some kind of "end of the world" scenarios, when only the intelligent and strong would survive, that's why some of them don't even have a main character. People are falling like leaves... But not in this movie!

The Day After Tomorrow follows an accidentally separated family's life. Professor Hall's son, Sam is away from home because of an important competition, that can affect his and his teammates future. But when a storm strikes and the rain won't stop until it floods the streets of New York, the students' lives take a huge turn. Their hours are counted, while they are trapped in an old library that is buried by snow almost completely. Their food is limited, but luckily they have lots of books to burn to keep the room warm. So will Sam's father find his son before it's too late and they freeze to death?

Is this movie actually accurate?

Photo from Salon.com

No, and that is why the majority of scientists don't like the conception of the film. They say that the movie misrepresents important scientific facts, leading to confusion about the real climate crisis. While the movie brings attention to climate change, it changes the science for dramatic purposes. For example, it wrongly shows that the collapse of an ocean current system (AMOC) would cause a new ice age in just days, when in reality it would take decades and only slow warming in certain areas.

Scientists also note mistakes in how ice core drilling and forecasting models are shown. These errors spread misinformation instead of helping people understand the true dangers of climate change.

Is The Day After Tomorrow worth watching?

It is indeed! If you're a big fan of disaster movies, I guarantee that you'll love it! The movie has a 6.5 stars rating on imdb.com, and a bunch of reviews and critics online.

Here's one of the many positive feedbacks that the movie got:

"The film does start off absolutely brilliantly, with a wonderful idea for a story and truly spectacular special effects. As a matter of fact, the whole film is well worth watching for the special effects alone. The acting is not too bad; Jake Gyllanhaal is rather bland, but Dennis Quaid is a superb lead."

Nice review, Anna! This was familiar and I realized I watched it a while ago. I was stunned by the disasters and almost in fear. I mean, of course, it was a movie, but some of the things can happen in reality.

When I was in 6th grade, my class teacher once, just before the class was about to end, told us the story of the movie 'The Day After Tomorrow.'

I watched the movie as a kid, and watched it again last night! It's so cool (and kinda funny lol) that the first thing I see on Vocal is your review on it πŸ˜† Awesome work, and I agree with your points. The movie is great imo, but definitely has its faults

  • That is a great review!! It's a great 🍿 movie

    Amazing review, Anna!

  • The scientific mistakes in the movie, I guess there's two ways to see it, depending on what they were going for. If the movie was supposed to be educational and create awareness, then yes, they should have done more research. If the movie was just purely for entertainment, I feel it's okay because anything can happen in fiction. Anyway, with all that being said, I've not watched this movie yet and I loveeeeee disaster movies. I'll add this to my playlist

Climate problem is here, but we still have time, otherwise the billionaiers would do something already. They would lose their empire if the slaves died.

Thanks for the review, Anna! I like how your review was broken down into summary, facts, accuracy, and ratings. As disaster flicks go, I remember really liking this movie! I think they had a lot of clever set pieces. The helicopter scene where everything (including the flight crew) freezes over in a matter of seconds was a terrifying. Obviously, if it is cold enough to freeze the fuel line, then the crew should have been dead before they hit the ground, but I think for drama sake it was a great conceptualization, and it's a scene that's stuck with me for years! The effects still pretty much hold up, even 20 years later. I think this film bit off a lot doing multiple types of disasters, but they managed to handle it. I appreciate you bringing up that climate change scientists disagree with the science of this movie. At the end of the day though, I have to ask those critics, are viewers going to remember that the movie got forecasting models wrong or are they going to remember that this is a cautionary tale about our decisions and their impacts global warming? I know, I know, I yell at the tv too when I see something factually inaccurate, so I'm sure it's frustrating when it's your field they're showing, and they're showing it wrong. But if a movie at least gets us talking about things as important as climate change, I think that's half the battle. And I don't know about you, but the prospects of this movie scared the bejesus out of me when I first saw it!

Aww great work, forgot about this movie. You have me curious to see how it’s aged or to go back and watch natural disaster movies and see if they have any foreshadowing clues or references to things that might have or will occur. I watch older movies differently now lol
