the clever Monkey

Once upon a time, there was a very clever monkey. One day, he roasted some corn kernels. A traveler was passing by on horseback, and seeing him, the monkey called out, Uncle, uncle, have some corn

The traveler declined, saying, No, you eat them yourself.

The monkey insisted, No, uncle, you must have some. He grabbed a handful of corn and gave it to the traveler. As soon as the traveler finished eating, the monkey slyly said, Uncle, now let me ride the horse.

The traveler refused, but the monkey cleverly replied, Then return my corn

Since the traveler had already eaten the corn, he had no way to return it. Left with no choice, he let the monkey ride the horse.

As they traveled, they came across an old man twisting ropes. The monkey had another idea and said, Uncle, lets take his ropes too.

The traveler protested, No, hell beat us with those ropes

But the monkey insisted, Then give me back my corn

Seeing no other way, the traveler let the monkey take the ropes. Further ahead, they reached a well. The monkey, always scheming, said, Uncle, lets take a bucket and a ladle too

The traveler, now exhausted, hesitated, but the monkey again reminded him, Then give me back my corn

The monkey went to a farmer near the well and tricked him into falling asleep. Once the farmer dozed off, the monkey took the bucket and ladle and ran back to the traveler, placing them on the horse.

They continued their journey and soon spotted a girl carrying a pot of buttermilk and a stack of bread on her head. The monkey whispered, Uncle, lets steal the bread

The traveler objected, No The villagers will chase us and beat us up

But the monkey repeated, Then return my corn

The monkey scared the girl, snatched her bread and buttermilk, and placed them on the horse.

Further along the road, they encountered drummers carrying large drums. The monkey saw an opportunity and said, Uncle, lets grab a drum

The traveler, now fully aware of the monkeys tricks, sighed, No Theyll beat us

But the monkey persisted, Then return my corn

He tricked the drummers, stole a drum, and placed it on the horse. By now, the horse was overloaded.

As night approached, they arrived at a village. A girl at a well warned them, This village is haunted by a demon who has driven everyone away. Leave before he finds you

But the monkey, full of confidence, said, Uncle, well spend the night here

The demon returned home that night. As he sat down to eat, the monkey whispered to the traveler, Uncle, I need to pee.

The traveler was horrified, Dont The demon will notice

But the monkey insisted, Then return my corn

He urinated near the demons plate, but the demon thought it was just water spilled from the girls jug.

A little later, the monkey whispered again, Uncle, I feel like crying.

The traveler begged, Please, stop The demon will hear

But the monkey cried out loudly. Still, the demon remained unaware.

Then, the monkey had his final trick: Uncle, I want to beat the drum

The traveler groaned, Youll get us killed

But the monkey pounded the drum. The demon jumped in shock and demanded, Who are you?

The monkey boomed, Who are YOU?

The demon growled, I am the demon

The monkey laughed, I am the demons father

The demon, startled, asked, Prove it

The monkey first threw down the long ropes, saying, See my hair

Then he tossed the drum, See my chest

Next, he splashed the buttermilk, See my spit

Terrified by the proof, the demon ran away and never returned. The monkey, the traveler, and the girl happily settled in the village, free of fear forever.
