A lot has happened this season on The Boys, and there are a lot of loose ends to tie up. Homelander and Neumann are planning on killing the president, Sage is out on her own, Annie has been captured, and Butcher is basically dead. There is one season left and this finale episode not only needs to tie up all of those loose ends, but they also need set up the final season (and I would really appreciate it if they would give us something for Gen V season 2).
My poor Huey is continually getting sexually assaulted by shape shifted Annie. I really don’t think that they are handling this well, they didn’t even really deal with what happened to him at Tek Knights house and that isn’t sitting right. So it's going to come down to the aftermath, but I am losing confidence.
Frenchie is finally making himself useful this season, trying to replicate the virus.
Homelander absolutely loses his shit after finding the picture of Butcher and Becca in Ryan’s backpack. He is losing control over Ryan and he is obviously aging so he's losing control in general.
This shifter is in Annie’s head and it's kind of brutal but Erin Moriarty is doing an amazing job. I love when actors get the chance to play the chance to play two different versions of themselves. It really lets them push their skills and it's awesome.
Butcher being on his death bed really isn’t doing anything for me. He really hasn’t been relevant for a while and he hasn’t been a central point since the 2nd season. This is no longer about him and Homelander and the fact that they kind of tried to shoehorn that back in this season feels really lazy.
Firecracker continues to be super irritating. Homelander is completely off the deep end so plans are out the window, he outed Nuemann as a supe on live TV. This sets off some fucking chaos. Firecracker’s mommy meds are making her sick so hopefully she dies soon.
Bobby saying “idjits” was 100% for Supernatural fans and I love Kirpke for it.
Annie kicking the shit out of the shifter is great. The moment her and Kimiko shared was very sweet. Karen really is carrying this show, she doesn’t have any lines but damn my girl really is an incredible actress, she conveyed so much with so little and it's amazing.
Huey fully admits that there were things that should have clued him into the fact that the shifter was not Annie. He absolutely should have known. This story actually happens in a lot of shows and I swear to god if you can’t recognize your own partner, you are in fact the problem. He had a whole list of reasons the shifter wasn’t Annie and he still didn’t realize it until way too late. Sorry but Annie had every right to be pissed. None of this changes that the shifter absolutely sexually assaulted Huey, both things exist at once.
Okay…we’ve all wanted Frenchie and Kimiko together this whole time but because they forced them apart all season and put both their characters on the back burner it feels so forced and unearned. That could have been such a good moment, a sigh of relief but they just wrote and set it up so poorly.
Ryan kills Grace, basically leaving Butcher to die alone. But Butcher of course has to go crash the group's plan. Butcher killing off Nuemann also feels really random and unearned. He was just struggling to stand and all of a sudden he can take out Nuemann without breaking a sweat? Sorry, no.
Sage proves herself a genius and tells Homelander that this was all according to her plan. A plan Homelander had to be kept out of because he’s an idiot. So we are ending the season with Homelander getting exactly what he wanted. Our boys are on the run, having to split up to stay safe.
So it seems we will be starting the fifth and final season with Neuman’s kid in the same group home that Marie grew up in. And our heroes are dead or captured. As they take Frenchie away Kimiko finally talks, and Annie flies away. Butcher has the virus and he drives into the night. Season 2 of Gen V will be coming out before season 5 of The Boys so we will see some of the fallout from this sooner rather than later as Gen V is set to release sometime next year. And it looks like we will be getting Soldier Boy back in the action next season as well. It was a good finale, with lots of what should have been awe striking moments, but the rest of the season didn’t set these moments up very well leaving them feeling a little hollow.
