The Apprentice

Review

By Alexandrea CallaghanPublished about a year ago 3 min read

Well folks, I watched it so that you don’t have to. Perhaps one of the most controversial movies of the year we’ve got The Apprentice starring Sebastian Stan (interesting career move there bud). Now I want to preface this by saying that I will be taking politics completely out of my review. I will be doing what I always do and analyzing the film as objectively as possible. I will not be bringing any personal feelings into this review. This is ONLY about the elements of the film.

Opening with Nixon tapes is diabolical.

We pointed out that his father was the reason that he had a job and business at all, that's good.

The film style reflects the time period, making it play a little more like a documentary than a film. It's an interesting choice, even the camera angles make it feel more like a first hand experience. Much different then most bio-pics. We know that some of the events depicted are going to be fictionalized, it's Hollywood and generally speaking actual documentaries don’t get wide releases. But having it feel real was certainly a choice.

Trump get’s 3 rules from Cohn; 1. Attack, attack, attack 2. Never admit wrongdoing 3. Claim victory, never admit defeat. Now it really doesn’t matter what line of business you are in. I think we can all agree that these 3 rules are hostile and extremely delusional.

Ivana kind of fully admits to being a golddigger, honesty is the best policy I guess. I’m not loving the actress that they chose for Ivana. The only similarity I see between them is that they are both blonde.

The writing really nailed his pension for repetitive adjectives. Fantastic. Amazing. Spectacular. Use of adjectives does not make you convincing or well spoken by the way. I see this a lot with some newer books, not only are they entirely written based on tropes but there is such an overuse of adjectives and not in a fun “wow this world is super detailed I can almost see it” kind of way. But in an “I’m not sure this person knows how real people talk” kind of way.

As the movie goes on Sebastian Stan really settles into Donald Trump's mannerisms. The way that he talks, the way that he moves, his expressions it is very obvious that Sebastian Stan really did the work to become who he was emulating.

Saying you aren't attracted to your model wife anymore when you look like that is actually insane.

Well Sebastian Stan did an incredible job, I am not quite sure how his career is going to fair after this. People in Hollywood feel like it was a bad move because they hate Trump. And I can’t imagine that conservatives are loving this portrayal so I can’t envision really anyone hiring Sebastian Stan for a whole lot of anything relevant after this. Now I know that Stan just took a job, this man has never actually cared about a single role he has ever played. The man just wants to feed himself. I think that the cinematography choices were great. Making the film feel like a documentary was really an interesting choice. I think that it aided the film. Overall, as much as you want to be impartial about the film, the way that you feel about Trump, will color how you feel about the story. The objective elements; The pacing, and the writing quality were good. But film is meant to make you feel something and how you feel about him will dictate how you feel about the film.
