Tarot

Review

I am a huge horror movie fan but only in the fall. I think releasing horror films into theaters any other time of the year inherently sets them up for failure. But then they get put on streaming services where I can enjoy them at my leisure so here we are. Netflix now houses Tarot, one of the horror films that was needlessly released earlier this year. My bar for horror films is pretty high so let’s see how this compares.

We are starting with teenagers in the woods. That is a classic horror movie start so I can not be mad at that. It is a winning formula. Then we have a girl alone in a big house by herself. And she is, of course, the first one to die. She did in fact go into the attic where she heard a noise. There is this piece of media analysis that states that we can’t expect characters to know what genre they are in, but if you hear a noise coming from an attic or basement you are an idiot if you do not assume you are in a horror movie. I can’t make myself feel bad for stupid people. Noises in the dark are none of your business. We seem to be hitting all of the tropes here.

Creepy lore tied to these Tarot cards is about right. I actually appreciate how quickly these deaths are happening, I hate when horror movies drag out what we already know is going to happen. The act structure is very clear. It's pretty formulaic but not in such a bad way that it takes me out of the movie. There are still a lot of places for this movie to go. A lot of possible ending. I found myself thinking about what I would do and there were a lot of options and the one that they went with wasn’t even on my list. So I think that it ended really well. I do love that the pretty blonde wasn’t the first one to die. You can thank Buffy the Vampire Slayer for that one. Cause not only did she live until the end but she is the one that figured out how to save them all.

The movie is a tight hour and a half. I love when films that don’t need to be very long, aren't. There are so many movies that are 2+ hours that absolutely do not need to be.

I also love that they didn’t drop anything that they set up. Each person’s horoscope had a way out, something that the person had to do in order to not die and there was only one person that realized that. But I love that they included that. Because that was probably the one question that I had towards the end of the movie.

Overall I think it was a pretty decent horror movie. I think that horror is probably one of the most difficult genres to keep being original in. And at this point in society it is very hard to actually scare people. Most of what drives scary movies has been done to death so many times that people are just kind of numb to it. That said, it was properly creepy, had a good amount of suspense and didn’t over rely on jump scares. The story was clear and made sense. The tropes they used were simply building blocks and they didn’t overuse any of them. I would give the movie a good 7/10. It wasn’t anything groundbreaking but if you need more scary movies to watch for spooky season it is worth the hour and a half.
