Stitch Holds Incredibly, Karate Kid Lack Force: British Box Office Round up May 30-Jun 01

The fuzzy blue alien takes number 01 again, keeping the Karate Kid from top spot.

The first week of June brings viewers to the movie screens in their droves. After a blockbuster weekend last week, both 'Lilo and Stitch' and 'Mission: Impossible' keep hold of the number one and two spots on the top 10 for the weekend. Coming in a distant third was the first weekend of 'Karate Kid: Legends', bringing together Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio to the tune of £2.6million, nearly a whole million behind Mission in second place with £3.5million.

The true winner of the weekend is, of course, Lilo and Stitch with £6.1million from the weekend, but thanks to a school half term, it's cumulative total has jumped to nearly £26million, bringing it comfortably into third place on the highest grossing films of 2025 chart, jumping 5 spots from last week. You really can't undersell the power of a family movie and a half term, contributing to the film only dropping 36% of business from last weekend. To put it into context, Stitch in two weeks of release has outgrossed the entirety of Snow White's run, which is still putting up some numbers in a select few cinemas across the country.

Stitch's release day counterpart, Mission: Impossible, sees an impressive jump as well, landing 5th highest grossing 2025 release so far, but seeing a much steeper drop. The supposed final film in the mission franchise has seen very mixed reception, and probably the lost of a fair few premium format screens has contributed to a much sharper drop off for it in weekend number 2. Regardless, it's still impressive numbers for the franchise, and is outpacing Dead Reckoning's weekend 2 numbers to pull nearly £17.5million.

Karate Kid may have released in a slightly over-crowded market, but it's pull is nevertheless disappointing. The last film, 2010's requel, pulled £5.6million in its opening weekend for a final gross of £14.6 once all was said and done, so it seems unlikely that the Kid will hit that. However, the film has a modest budget and has performed in expectation over in the states, so time will tell how this film lands.

Other points of note on the top 10 are the entrance of Wes Anderson's latest, 'The Phoenician Scheme' debuting at number 7, but was still beaten by the third weekend of surprise hit 'Final Destination: Bloodlines'. With a cumulative £9.4 million so far, it's eyeing up a place on the top ten of the year with impressive holds. It's unclear if it will be able to outpace current number 10 spot 'Snow White', but it's definitely possible.

In addition, Minecraft has finally left the top 10 weekend grossers after 8 weeks of release (only just), so we'll start seeing the story close on the mega-hit of the year so far. We'll be tracking if it can hold onto that number one spot as the summer movie season continues.

This will also likely be the last weekend of top 10 appearance for 'Sinners', the vampire blockbuster from Ryan Coogler with rumours of a sequel circling, and thinky-Marvel movie 'Thunderbolts*'. But whilst the latest Marvel movie is undoubtedly a disappointment, pulling in still behind 'Eternals', Sinners is a runaway success. A small victory for the Marvel powerhouse is finally outgrossing Sinners at the box office, with £15.9million for Thunderbolts and £15.6 for Sinners. But the miniscule nature of that gap is testament to how low Thunderbolts, even with its retitling, has underperformed. Once again, it looks like Marvel's hopes are on the Fantastic Four to pull them out from disappointment this year.

So going into next week, the race is on to see how Stitch can close the gap between it and Bridget Jones for number 2 spot. We'll have to see how well it holds in weekend 3.

Coming out as competition this week are the release of John Wick spin-off 'Ballerina' which has relatively healthy early buzz, and a horror movie from the team behind Smile, 'Clown in a Cornfield' which has already been out in the states for a couple of weeks. Do either of these movies have the legs to dethrone Mission or Stitch? Only time will tell.

Lilo and Stitch is killing it! Family movies rule during school breaks. Mission: Impossible's drop is steep.
