The origins of South Indian cinema lie in the production of silent films by luminary figures such as Raghupathi Venkaiah Naidu, who made his first film in 1901.
Other early filmmakers were Gudavalli Ramabrahmam, Gottipati Brahmam, Bommireddy Narasimha Reddy, Chalapathi Rao, R. S. Prakash and Ghantasala Balaramaiah.
The acclaimed and the highest-grossing south Indian film Bahubali 2: The Conclusion, a sequel to the 2015 film Bahubali: The Beginning. The film was made on a budget of βΉ2.5 billion (US$37 million), and it went on to gross over βΉ1,780 crores (US$270 million) worldwide in all languages, becoming the highest-grossing Indian film of all time.
When Did South Indian Movies Start

South Indian movies started when silent films were produced by Raghupathi Venkaiah Naidu, one of the pioneers of the film industry in India. He was also an entrepreneur, distributor and exhibitor.
He produced short films and travelled across South India screening them at various town halls and opera houses. The films made during that period were Bhishma Pratigna (1911), Raja Harishchandra (1913), Satyavadi Raja Harishchandra (1921) and Lanka Dahanam (1917).
The first full-length silent feature in Tamil, Keechaka Vadham was made by R. Nataraja Mudaliar in 1916. In 1920, the first Tamil film with dialogue, Keechaka Vadham was released.
This film marked a turning point in the history of cinema in South India. Silent films had their own limitations, which led to the rise of talkies.
How South Indian Movies Make Money
As per estimates, the south Indian film industry contributes 25% to the total Indian film industry's revenue. With Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada films together making more than 1000 films a year, how do they make money?
The top grosser in south Indian movies make profits ranging between Rs 30 crore and Rs 100 crore. But how do they make money?
After the huge success of Sivaji in 2007, the way Kollywood (Tamil film industry) made money changed. A lot of producers started selling satellite and digital rights even before production.
"Earlier we used to sell satellite rights after release but now it is pre-sold even before production," says T Siva, owner of Amma Creations. The same trend was followed by Tollywood (Telugu film industry), says Prasad Devineni, producer of Baahubali 2: The Conclusion.
The south Indian film industry is highly commercialized. It is a big business for distributors and producers as well as for actors and other crew members involved in making the films.
The revenues are high owing to the mass appeal of these movies which are produced on big budgets that can be recovered from theatres alone as well as through sales of related merchandise like CDs, DVDs and downloaded versions online.
How South Indian Movies are Made
South Indian movies are growing in popularity every day. The reasons are not far to seek- they are as entertaining and funny as their North Indian counterparts but with an extra dash of emotion and passion.
The South Indian movie industry is thriving, with the three major languages giving rise to a multitude of entertainers who have managed to capture the hearts of millions of Indians.
So much so that now, even Hollywood directors are looking at casting the actors in South Indian movies for their films.
The South Indian movie industry is a vibrant one that has its own set of superstars and celebrates its own variety of movies. The movies are made in the language of Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam.
They have their own set of production houses that have produced some of the biggest super hits in the history of Indian cinema.
The process to make South Indian films is quite similar to that of other films. The movie begins with a simple idea which is then developed into a script or story. After the script is ready, it is time to start the process of pre-production.
After this, the major part of movie-making commences i.e.- Production. Once the shooting is completed it's time for post-production which includes dubbing, editing, VFX and much more.
This step completes the whole process of movie-making and releases it for people's viewing pleasure.
Why South Films are Better Than Bollywood
