Sinners

Review

As always I am behind on my movie watching but one of my most anticipated titles this year was Sinners. Not only did I hear nothing but wonderful things about it upon its release but it stars Michael B Jordan and Hailee Steinfeld, both of whom I love. I think Ryan Coogler is an incredible director so this was one that I was happy to check off the list.

The first thing I notice is the unbelievable direction as soon as this movie starts. The opening scene not only sets the tone for the film but the flashes between the present and whatever happened the night before makes the vibe extra eerie.

Michael B. Jordan was such an incredible casting choice. He is not only super talented but he’s so damn charismatic and fun to watch, he really sucks you into the story.

I like this brief religious backdrop, it adds a lot to not only Sammie’s personal story but the family dynamics between him and the twins.

Getting slightly distracted because Michael B. Jordan is so damn hot. This period of fashion is really working for him. So these twins apparently inspire fear but damn he's just so charming I don't think I care if they are the bad guys.

I love these walking shots they inform so much of the universe we are living in. Nothing to tell you about a character then how other characters react to them.

The use of just the audio when slim is reliving this memory is crazy good storytelling. So many incredible writing and directing devices are being used here and I am obsessed.

Here's my entirely unsolicited white lady opinion on the story because I know a lot of black people are tired of every movie where they are the leads being about their history and suffering, but 1. Obviously that feels different when it's coming from one of your own, the people inside of a community will always tell their experience better than the people outside of it. Second of all I think if you do a decent job of using the history as a background and a framework and not as the plot itself it also comes off a lot better. Sinners is doing an incredible job of letting us know where we are in history and making the impact of that history clear without that being all the plot is about.

The boys each having complicated relationships with incredibly beautiful and strong women is such a great addition to this story. We know at this point that they twins are incredibly close and that they have affection for their younger cousin but them having women that keep them in check really adds to their character depth.

I hope everyone goes into this movie blind because i knew before going into it that it was a vampire movie, but the idea of someone watching this and it being revealed that it's about vampires 45 minutes in is incredible. The reveal was so damn good.

Hailee is so beautiful, she literally glows. I love her.

This Sammie kid is incredible, his voice is incredible and this guy is a great actor. I feel like I haven't seen him in anything before and I hope that changes because he’s fantastic.

They way they sort of let the veil down and show the evolution of how music affects people both the people playing and listening is incredible it's so well integrated without using flashbacks. It really makes the music a part of the story. It's also an incredible nod to the fact that we owe most genres of music to black people.

The structure of this movie is impeccable, seriously it's paced so well.

Oh also it seems that we are abiding by the whole vampires have to be invited in thing, and they can be invited in by anyone inside. We love classic lore.

Ya know they did make these guys criminals but they made them victims of their circumstances kind of criminals and that's always the best because then I don't feel bad for loving them and i can justify their actions in my head.

Alright add this movie to the very shortlist of films that the general public was right about, this is easily the best film i have seen in a while. It was truly an incredible movie. Michael B. Jordan was fantastic, he really gave a flawless performance, the entirety of the supporting cast was also amazing. The structure and pacing were perfect and the story itself was so damn compelling. It is the first film that I have seen this year that is gonna get a perfect 10.
