Dark magic and evil rituals are two things Robyn’s life knows almost too well and this day won’t be any different. Something deadly is coming for our favorite vigilante-archer, and Robyn is going to be in a fight for her soul when she takes on the mysterious Voodoo Dawn!
I like this story and when we see who guest stars it raises this to a whole new level. It was only logical given the nature of the story and to be honest I think that the way this ties into the Grimm Spotlight issue was actually very smartly done. The opening here is intriguing and it engages the reader through the ritual that we see and that more than anything is priceless to the enjoyment of the story. I am also very much enjoying the way we see Robyn being pulled into this story to begin with and how Smitty is fast becoming a perennial fan favourite character to show up when you least expect it is beyond what I could have hoped for.
I am enjoying the way that this is being told. How we see the story & plot development through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented extremely well. Joe put some time and effort into this one and as Zenescope’s flagship hero(ine) that’s precisely what should be done. The character development is fantastic and as we see the dialogue, the character interaction and how they act and react to the situations and circumstances they encounter do wonders in fleshing them out. The pacing is superb and as it takes us through the pages revealing the twists & turns along the way helps to draw us further and further into the book.
I’m actually impressed with how this is structure and how we see the layers within the story grow organically through what we see as well as continue from other books. Even though they do come from elsewhere it’s super easy to follow along and you get it, so if you haven’t read them you won’t be lost. The way everything works together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it moves the story forward is achieved very well.
I love the interiors here. The linework is amazing and how we see the varying weights and techniques being utilised to create the detail work is stellar stuff. While it retains that classic comic book style the way it’s done elevates the story in some subtle and bold ways. That we see backgrounds is great, though I would like to see more, and how they are incorporated into the composition within the panels to bring out the depth perception, sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the book is great to see. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a stellar eye for storytelling. The colour work is completely and utterly spectacular. The effects of the magic that we see are gorgeous and that’s a major component to the story. How we see the various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work shows a wonderful eye for colour and how to use it to its greatest potential.
While I love the oversized issues I really think it’s time to see four to six issue arcs again because that’s where the character really gets to shine. She’s the best archer in comics right now and it’s high time she was treated as such by giving her those grand sweeping arcs that we need to showcase that. We need a regular series writer and art team to let loose on Robyn and show the world her true potential.

Just me talking about the comics I enjoy reading, ones that you might not know exist and spotlighting the indie creators that excite me.
