*spoilers ahead*
Let me start by saying how happy I am that romcoms and romance movies exist. Is there a better genre? No. Without them, we wouldn’t have Meg Ryan or Ryan Gosling, and I’m just happy to be in a world where they exist; now on to this movie.
The reason I watched this movie was for Sam Heughan, aka Jaime Fraser from Outlander. I love his accent and look, so I was ready to watch it. Then, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, an Indian woman, is the main love interest. YES. With all my chips in the middle, I am going to watch the fuck out of this movie.
The premise of this movie is Mira (Chopra Jonas) is texting her dead boyfriend. The guy with the phone number now, Rob Burns (Heughan), is reading these messages and is increasingly interested in this woman, though he has closed himself off to love after his girl left him a week before the alter. Bummer, am I right?
As the movie progresses, we see Mira travel through her grief and fall in love again. There are scenes with Celine Dion (the real Celine Dion) giving Rob Burns, a music critic, love advice, and, of course, plenty of Dion songs in the background. This movie is set in New York City, with the main characters not owning a car and using a taxi multiple times. Which is classic New York, I'm told. I haven't been to New York, but with the number of movies set there I feel like I know it intimately.
Mira uses an app to find love, and her first date is with Nick Jonas, a fitness-obsessed asshole, whom most women can relate is the worst type of date. She sets impressive boundaries with this guy and eventually has a run-in with Rob Burns, which is simply dreamy. Of course, he has this giant secret; how does one tell a woman that they have read their innermost thoughts and fell in love with those words, which also happen to be words meant for a dead boyfriend? There's not an easy way to deliver that news. This is pivotal for a romance movie. There must be a giant miscommunication or secret.
This movie had a way of combining real life with an undertone of uncertainty. (Which is also a fantastic movie. Adding that to my list.)
What grabbed my interest in this movie was the Indian woman as a love interest. (which I stated previously!) We need to see more Indian culture represented on screen, which brings me to the Easter Egg in the film. Mira's sister is playing Uncharted 4: A Thief End as Chloe, an Indian character in the game! I jumped out of my seat with excitement; representation matters. For those who may not know, I have a massive appreciation for Indian culture (and for culture in general) and how we as a society need to be more educated on the fact there are multiple states in India and multiple languages spoken throughout the whole country.
**Also, if interested, I have poems based on the whole soundtrack of Uncharted 4 for your pleasure here***
Back to the movie.
I loved the cadence of this movie. Just fast enough to get to the point, but you feel like you get to know the characters. If you need a good movie to watch, this is it. Heughan did a fantastic job as the heartless Rob Burns music critic. Celine Dion was a remarkable matchmaker. Priyanka Chopra Jonas was a flawless main character. I will be rewatching it at least four times this week. 🤗

congrats on the TS
That was really well written
I used to be a sucker for rom coms. Like obsessed. But as my mental health got worse, I just cannot stand rom coms, lol. I'm an Indian but born and raised in Malaysia. So were my parents and grandparents. And I think you love Indian culture more than I do. I'm not really a fan of culture, no idea why, lol. I'm so happy you love this movie so much! Go binge watch it gurllll!
Fantastic review <3
This movie is on my to be watched list. I can't wait to watch it.
Brilliant review! I loved this too… especially Celine’s appearance 🕊️ The little girl in me still adores her
Amazing! I love this genre too and both of these actors. Apparently a lot of people didn’t love this movie but I’m still stoked to watch.
Such a detailed review. I am also a lover of romantic comedies and Indian culture! I’ll have to give this a watch. Thanks for sharing.
