'Project Power' Movie Review
When there's a pill, there's a power...
Introduction
One pill. Five minutes. Any superpower you could imagine. Would you take the pill?
Key themes
A man gives some young people some new drugs, that give people superpowers, to sell.
The 'Major' is looking for the source, the person who is producing the 'power' drugs.
The Major and Robin, one of the sellers of the power drug, team up to find the source.
Frank, a police officer stops and arrests the Major, believing he is the bad guy selling the drugs.
Frank, the Major and Robin end up working together. Frank wants to help the people of New Orleans, Robin wants money to help her mother and the Major wants to save his daughter Tracy.
The three successfully shut down 'Genesis', the corporation producing the pills.
Key questions
- How long has the pill been around?
- Does the Major have natural superpowers? Did Tracy inherit superpowers from him? How did Tracy get her superpowers?
- How did Frank and Robin meet? What is their relationship? What were they working together to achieve?
- The man distributing the pills said "One day you might never need the pill" - does the pill give permanent power overtime?
- How did Frank know that Robin was with the Major and helping him?
- Did Frank assume the Major was the bad guy because he has dangerous powers?
- The pills give random superpowers, yet every time Frank took a pill, it appeared he got 'bulletproof'. How is this possible? Frank knew the risk of the pills (explosion) yet he confidently took the pills?
- If you have superpowers, why would you be physically hurt? For example, Frank got shot by a bullet, but the bullet ricocheted off his skin, yet he received a physical bruise. Why? If you have superpowers, you should have super-protection - no physical harm.
- What is the time frame of the film? 1-2 days?
Conclusion
'Project Power' is a powerful story. The main theme of the narrative is power, who it belongs to and how to obtain it. Although the concept of superiority in power or 'superpowers' is highlighted, the real power in the story line was the power of relationships. What would you do for those you love. Robin sold drugs to help her diabetic mother, Frank respected his job in order to help the community and the Major risked his life for his daughter's. Despite the main characters coming from different backgrounds and having different sources for their 'power', they surprisingly connected and all had pure intentions. The twist of the tale is when the audience discovers that superpowers are real, taken from a real source, a human - Tracy. It is intriguing that the pills were not products of scientific manifestations as it makes the story less of a cliche. Overall, the concept of power is complicated, everyone wants it, but cannot have it and those who have it continue to obtain it. However, there is power in unity, and when the Major, Frank and Robin came together they beat the majority.
It is human to thrive to be rich and in doing so we find ourselves sometimes engulfed in an endless pursuit of wealth, possession and power.
Always choose the right power...
