Possession Movie Review: Filmmaker Amal Neerad makes a huge buzz with his directorial debut movie Celluloid. However, it turns out to be a train wreck with all its technicalities. You cannot deny that the film was released only to cash in on the Sankranthi season. The majority of the film is a repetitive narration of drug-dealing, but on top of that, Amal tries to make the movie interesting by introducing all sorts of a make-believe characters. From Big B, Priyanka Chopra, Dev and now Amy Jackson, nobody seems to have any fun in this flick. Personally, I can not understand the rationale behind bringing up these characters so early, and more importantly, the inability to concentrate on their mental state throughout the movie.

The scenario of heroin trafficking is put across forcefully, and it can be clearly understood that some people are targeting the youth of today. The real issues need to be addressed with realism. Instead, with such bullshit characterizations, the film ended up putting me in a state of confusion and frustration. Another element that was put in a lackluster manner was the character that the kids played. The film tries to come across as a complete performance-based drama, but in the process it lost its point completely. Some of the expressions they tried to pull off, seemed artificial. The most disappointing aspect about this is that I had heard such powerful dialogues in the recent films like Mani Ratnam's Oliyathunnilla, but even then the film could not make me feel the reality.

Performances: How does a newcomer end up with such an amazing star cast? It's probably because Director Amal Neerad knows that people are still craving for a good good performance from the movie stars. He takes advantage of the fact and doesn't even try to be careful when it comes to the casting of Amy Jackson.

There's just no "less" Amy in the entire movie and that's what we expected from this young actress. There's no breaking in to an acting career here, but Amy tries to make up for it by trying hard to act like a fish out of water in this movie. At least she holds her own in the scenes where she's stuck with the older actors, but we wish that she'd try and do something else instead.

What really irks about the movie is the quality of cinematography.

Most of the frames look like they were shot on an iPhone. You get a better feel about it when you see the movie in the theater, because it's just so distracting to look at.

Other Aspects: The background score is too 'soft' for a period flick and the background art in the movie doesn't have the appeal it should. The dialogues, however, have a very good flavour of 'corrupt' era and I loved every minute of them. They're a huge spoiler, so don't read any further.

Comfort Level: 2.5/5

Technical Aspects: The Production Design of the movie is very poor. There's no trace of anything grand or stylish in it. The movie has a few scenes where the writer and director go for a scene. It looks amateurish and almost unintentionally funny. The editing is good, but it lacks the punch it should have. The Background Score is also good but again, it's way below the mark.

Day 1 Day 2 Day 3 Day 4 Day 5 Total: 14 Days

NB: This is not a true story, but the narration is extremely far-fetched and based on facts, not truth.

Final Verdict: Celluloid will cost you nearly two and half hours of your precious time and end up giving you a very disappointing experience.
