Phoenix Entities

Breakdown and Background

By Alexandrea CallaghanPublished 4 years ago 3 min read

Now that I am more active on Tik Tok, I’ve had a lot of questions about the different Phoenix entities, and as they are a little too much to sum up in a 30 second to 1 minute video, I thought I would dedicate an article to explaining the separate forces in a little more depth.

Dark Phoenix

A pure force of destruction, the other side of the coin to Phoenix Force, it's essentially just Phoenix Force that has been tainted by human emotion and judgment. That means a similar power scale but totally uncontrollable. The Dark Phoenix was awakened in Jean after the death of her love, Cyclops (X-Men #133). After her first death, still as “Marvel Girl”, she was resurrected by the Phoenix. Launching the “Dark Phoenix Saga” which led to her second and more sexist death in 1984.

Phoenix Force

Phoenix Force represents life, all life that exists or will exist, creation and destruction. The Phoenix Force is an immortal, unkillable entity that takes on hosts that it deems worthy. The Phoenix Force has taken on several hosts both before and after Jean Gray, but the Omega level mutant remains as its most consistent host. The Force came to Jean when she telepathically called out for help as she was dying in the middle of a space mission (X-Men #101). The Force answered her call and saved Jean and the X-Men and in doing so melded with Jean’s consciousness and personality and put Jean in a sort of coma to heal, while taking over her body and impersonating her (Fantastic Four #286). After having her mind messed with by Mastermind the mutant research center studied the Phoenix; they reached the conclusion that eventually the Phoenix’s power would be too much for Jean’s body and mind to handle. Not wanting to lose the perfect host, the Force put up mental blocks to limit the amount of power she’d have access to at once.

White Phoenix of the Crown

This version of the Phoenix actually came from a newly hatched Phoenix that was absorbed into a future reality in the white hot room. Here Jean, with all the assistance from the White Phoenix of the Crown and the other Phoenix consciousness, reshapes the universe. Jean’s universe was meant to die and instead she used the power of the most powerful cosmic beings across the universes to heal it.

Phoenix 5 (Avengers v X-Men)

The Phoenix Five are the hosts that the Phoenix Force took over after the great and arrogant Iron Man decided to split the Force. The five consists of; Cyclops, Emma Frost, Namor, Colossus and Magik. These 5 decided to create their own Utopia, gaining the mistrust of the Avengers in doing so. The Avengers made a move against the 5 and got themselves nearly killed by Cyclops and Emma before getting saved, single handedly, by Scarlet Witch. It is worth noting that the only known entity that the Phoenix Five fears is the Scarlet Witch. The Five are powerful individually but as they are all simply pieces of the Phoenix Force they prefer to stay together and are not as powerful as individuals as the Force itself.

Now I can and probably will talk about all of the sexist, misogynistic tropes that surround this character. For she is actually a prime example of all the tropes that I hate with a fiery passion but that is not the purpose of this particular article. So for everyone that asked, I truly hope this helped and that the differences between all the Phoenix entities and how they weave together makes a little more sense.
